Holiday Magic

"How is it coming?" asked Quatre.

"I've never seen anything like it," replied Trowa with a smile and a shake of his head.

"No one does these special holidays quite like Duo," said Quatre with a happy sigh. "Too bad he happened to be born into this time; he was made to party."

"Hey! C'mon guys! Out! Out, out, out!" Duo burst into the living room making shooing motions. "I still have to decorate and I sure can't do it around you all!" He glanced at the clock. "Oh my god! Hurry up!"

"Do you need us to go to the store for anything?" asked Trowa.

"FunMart is open, I think," added Quatre.

"No, I've got every-- Oh, wait! Candles! I forgot the candles!" Duo slapped himself in the forehead. "Damn! Quatre, remember the red ones I was looking at?"

"With the gold embellishment?"

"That's the ones! Let's see, I need... sixteen. Thanks Qat; thanks Tro; you're a pair of lifesavers!"

"Well, we want this to be a perfect holiday too," smirked Trowa.

"Heero, whaddaya think? Is it okay? Does it look right, I mean?"

"Duo, you've outdone yourself this time. It's gorgeous."

"I wish he'd..."

"Hn. He doesn't do holidays; you know that."

"Yeah... But this one is special. It's not just any old holiday; this is the big one!"

"True. We'll just have to drag him down when it's time."

"I guess so. It would be great if he could join in, though. I've got a mess of stuff in the kitchen just begging to be licked."

"You're not the only one..."

"Huh? What was that?"

"Nothing, Duo. May I help you clean up?"

"That would be terrific, Heero!"

~*~

"Come down, please?"

"I am not interested in his barbaric customs. Please go away, Winner; I am reading."

"He's put a lot of hard work into this, Wufei. He wouldn't let any of us help him."

"I am well aware that he is a hard worker. That has nothing to do with me, however."

"Wufei..."

"No."

~*~

"He absolutely refuses to come down."

"Is everything ready?"

"Yes. Duo's setting up the candles now."

"Then we'll just have to bring him down."

"I'll do the music and see if there's anything I can help Duo with. Um... guys? Try not to get him too wound up, okay?"

"We won't give him a chance to get wound up."

~*~

"I told Winner--!"

"And we're telling you!"

"Duo worked very hard on this."

"You are NOT going to disappoint him."

"NO! I don't believe in this ridiculous-- UNHAND ME, YOU BARBARIANS!!!"

"You're going downstairs, Wufei..."

"...And you're going to enjoy yourself..."

"...If it's the last thing you ever do!"

"PUT ME DOWN!!!"

"Stop squirming!"

"Don't make me punch you."

"AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!"

~*~

"SURPRISE!!!"

Wufei squeezed his eyes even tighter. Heero poked him sharply in the ribs. Trowa muttered in his ear, "Would it kill YOU to be civilized for two minutes, Chang?"

Oh, all right! The sooner I look, the sooner I can get back to my book! And start planning my revenge!

He opened his eyes.

The room was bathed in colored light from paper lanterns of all shapes and sizes. Dozens of paper flowers sat on or were hung from every available surface. Around the room romped four huge paper dragons, breathing electric fire. He recognized the music as being from ancient China.

Wufei didn't realize that his mouth was hanging open, and that the only thing keeping him from sitting down hard on the floor were the hands under his arms. He could only gape in astonishment.

The evergreen tree in the corner wore red and gold decorations, and brightly wrapped boxes cluttered its base, but it wasn't the focal point. That was reserved for the dining room.

Duo stood in front of the massive dining table, dressed in a costume that straddled the line between traditional Chinese and a Japanese Geisha. He had even pinned his braid up on top of his head with red and gold chopsticks.

As Wufei stared, Duo sidled off to reveal sixteen gold-embossed scarlet candles in golden holders framing a large cake, iced in scarlet frosting, with green and gold dragons dancing around the words, "Happy Birthday, Wufei!"

The four pilots began to sing "Happy Birthday" and Wufei's face began to burn. Then his eyes began to burn. Then he whimpered.

When they finished, all four of them hugged him, laughing and wishing him happiness.

Wufei growled and glared, trying to blink at the same time.

"How did you know my birthday, Maxwell?"

Duo planted a quick kiss on his cheek, laughing. "What?! You think Heero's the only one who knows how to ferret out information?! Give me a break, Wuffers!"

"Duo did it all himself!" giggled Quatre. "He only told us about it yesterday."

"It's an interesting coincidence, your birthday falling on December 25th," said Trowa.

"Hn," agreed Heero.

In spite of his best attempts to remain angry, his curiosity got the better of him. He stepped up to the table, to get a closer look at the cake.

"You did this... Duo?"

"Yeah!" He was bouncing happily on the balls of his feet and grinning like the Cheshire Cat.

The dragons looked almost alive. He couldn't ever remember... Not since he was a child, at least... In the middle of a war... People he tried hard not to like... People he didn't want to get close to... And a weakness he couldn't run away from...

"Thank you," he whispered, then louder, "Thank you, Duo. Thank you all."

He suddenly grabbed Duo, dragging him over to Quatre, whom he also grabbed, and then Trowa and Heero. He clutched at them all, trying to hug them all at once and not cry on anyone's shoulder.

"Thank you! You... you... barbarians..."

"We love you, too, Fei," murmured Duo in his ear. "Whether you like it or not."

"God bless us, every one," said Heero softly.
