The Chibi Problem Part 4

I headed for the patio door, hoping the little sneak was hanging out there. He wasn't, of course. For a few seconds, I was lost. I simply could not imagine life without BabyDoll.

Then I started yelling for him. When I finally took a breath, I saw a movement in one of the trees. That's when I realised that the gundam was silent. Oh, Goddess! Have they ALL gone?!

But from the tree poked a small elfin face framed by hair the color of zinfandel. A young duo, looking both curious and wary. I sighed and stepped closer to the tree.

Sorry, sweetie; did I disturb your nap? He blinked at me and said softly "oooooiii" ending on a questioning note. I sat down on the garden wall.

BabyDoll's gone. He sneaked out the window flap while I was at work.

The little duo crept from his leafy cover to stretch his wings. "Shiiiii..." he called and then glided down to execute a very nice stall and settle gently on the table. He sat on the edge, letting his legs dangle, and cocked his head at me, waiting politely for me to continue.

Where are the others? I asked. The adults.

He fluttered his fingers and smiled brightly.

They went somewhere? He nodded eagerly.

It never ceases to amaze me how well the chibis seem to understand what I'm saying. These little guys are intelligent creatures. Just because we don't speak their language and they can't speak ours doesn't make them animals. They're more than dogs and cats, maybe more like dolphins; another intelligence. Maybe that's why I talk to them the way I do and actually expect answers.

BabyDoll went with them? Again the vigorous nod.

They're coming back. It wasn't a question. The little duo snorted and rolled his eyes. Translation: of COURSE, they're coming back!

I couldn't help it; I breathed a huge sigh of relief. The little duo hopped off the table and scurried over to climb into my lap, his pretty violet eyes filled with concern. He patted my hand and crooned softly. I picked him up and cuddled him and he snuggled into my arms.

You're a little flirt, aren't you? He fluttered sable lashes in agreement.

We sat there comfortably for a while, until a plaintive "kiiiiind?" sounded from the same spot in the tree that the duo had appeared. He came alert immediately and launched from my lap. A moment later he came gliding back, carrying a sleepy quatre. The quatre blinked at me and yawned, then crumpled down in my lap and curled into a ball.

I looked at the duo. And this is...?

He grinned and hugged the once-more-asleep quatre. The quatre swatted at him in his sleep.

Your brother? He smiled benevolently, and I knew I was right.

You're quite a pair of cuties. Bet your parents are very proud of you.

He climbed my shirt and snuggled against my collarbone. If I wasn't careful, I thought, I might find myself with another chibi...

Along about dusk we heard the first sounds of the gundam returning. The little duo climbed to my shoulder, bouncing in excitement, so I scooped up the still-sleeping quatre and stood up. And right on cue, the alpha duo appeared over the crest of the hill, his mate held firmly in his arms, followed by the rest of the gundam and my UA BabyDoll.

Most of the chibis headed for the trees, probably to check on their chibits, but the unmated adults and the juveniles landed in the yard. BabyDoll zoomed over to greet me, flanked by his persistent suitors.

I gave him a hard look. Just WHERE have you been, young man? He lifted his shoulders, his face coloring prettily, as he batted his lashes at me. Then he saw the chibit on my shoulder and the one in my arms (still asleep, mind you).

His eyes opened wide and his chin began to quiver. Two enormous tears welled up in his eyes. "Moooooiii?" he whimpered.

I stared at him. BabyDoll called me "mommie"!

Before I could react to THAT, a quatre let out a shrieking "KIIIIND?!" and the duo on my shoulder began calling. A moment later, an adult duo landed on my other shoulder and a quatre swarmed up me to the sleeping chibit. Immediately, I had a duo thrumming, rumbling, and waving his scythe only inches from my ear and a quatre clutching his barely awake offspring against his chest and hyperventilating like crazy.

HEY!

The adult on my shoulder grabbed his chibit and rocketed into the air. The quatre went down me faster than he came up, zinged across to the tree and disappeared into the leafy branches.

I felt like I'd just finished the 31st take of an X-Files episode. I swear to Goddess I could hear the theme music from "The Twilight Zone" from somewhere.

Before I could get any more confused, BabyDoll leaped into my arms, wrapping his arms around my neck and wailing miserably. I hugged him, at the same time trying to figure out what the hell was going on.

Apparently, the alpha wanted to know the same. He coasted in to land on my shoulder and make himself comfortable before giving me a raised eyebrow and an inquiring "oooooiii?"

Hell if I know, I muttered, and sat down again, stroking BabyDoll's braid as he sobbed against my shirt.

Okay, I began. I got home and discovered that he was gone. Then I discovered you were all gone. I called for him, and woke up the little duo. He came down to be sociable, then went and got his brother when he woke up. We were just hanging out when you guys came back.

He nodded and sighed as if he'd known it all along. Then he rumbled to a young heero, who launched for the tree where the cuddly pair had disappeared with their parents.

Daddy and Daddy had a meltdown, right?

He nodded.

First time parents?

Another nod.

What the hell; I nodded too. I understand. But what's gotten into BabyDoll? I wondered aloud.

The alpha leaned over and purred in my ear.

He thought I'd replaced him, just because he went off without permission? The alpha gave me a smirk and a thumbs-up.

Well, shit.

I held BabyDoll up where I could get a good look at him. His lovely violet eyes were circled in red, his face was blotchy and puffed and he was making a piteous little whimpering sound and reaching for me as if I were about to hand him over to a chiber.

Aw, sweetie, I murmured cuddling him close again. I wouldn't send you away or replace you. I love you; you're my baby doll. Those little guys just came down for some company. The duo told me you'd gone with the gundam and that they'd be back. I was worried for you.

"Moooooiii" he whined again.

It's all right now, sweetie; I was scared something had snatched you. I held him up again to meet his teary eyes. You have to let me know when you go out of the yard. Remember the coyotes?

He nodded anxiously, half-crawling into my shirt to curl up in my cleavage. The idle thought crossed my mind: Would he bite a guy who tried to cop a feel? Now, that would be a kick.

The alpha thrummed and I turned my head. He chattered for a bit, then rumbled, then sighed "Shiiiii..." BabyDoll looked up and the alpha shook his finger at him. BabyDoll nodded and clung tighter to me.

The big guy stood up, flexing his wings, and muttered, rumbled and thrummed, finally giving me a firm "oooooiii" before launching for the trees.

As I understand it, he gave BabyDoll a dressing down for going UA, and gave me his personal word that IF BabyDoll went out during the day again, that he would leave a note (?) of some kind.

Animals. Yeah. Riiiiight.
