There's a puddle of hot coffee on the seat beside me. I should be thankful that it missed my lap and hit the seat instead, but at this moment I can't do anything other than look at my best friend.
Heero's sitting across the table from me, comfortable in his corner of the booth, the paper spread out in front of him. A moment ago he was reading, sipping his coffee and not paying much attention to me. Now I'm his focus. He's looking at me with wide eyes, much like a small animal caught in the headlights of a car.
For a mad moment I wonder if that's how he feels. Is he worried I'm going to crush him?
It was my fault after all. I know how Heero is in the morning, I know that when he's reading an interesting article that he'll answer any question I put to him truthfully because his little internal auditor is not listening.
Usually I save this method to get his Christmas list or find out what he really thinks about the people I date, but this morning I had poked for something else...
And had gotten the unexpected.
Heero is still staring at me. I can see his body tensing, know that he's about to flee.
I reach out carefully and touch his elbow. "Say that again."
"You heard it the first time." The words are challenging, but his tone isn't. He sounds small and lost. Does he trust me so little?
"Please?"
He shakes his head and shifts a little. He's going to run.
"Was it the truth?"
"You know it was," and his face crumples. I tighten my hand on his arm.
"You should've said something."
"There was no point."
"There fucking is- I would've done something."
He shrinks back into the cushions and I realize that he misunderstood me.
"I have to go."
"No you don't. We work in the same place remember? I have an hour left and so do you." Before he can move, I slip out of my side of the booth and slide in next to him, blocking his exit. "Heero- say it again. Please?"
He studies my face for a minute, and then sighs. "Fine. You asked who I would want if I could have anyone in the world..."
"Yes- and you said..."
"You. I'd want you." He ducks his head so I can't see his expression under his bangs.
I pull my phone out of my pocket and push it into his hands. He gives me a puzzled look.
"Call work," I tell him with a smile, gesturing at my coffee stained pants. "I have to go home and change and you have to help me. I don't think we'll be going in today."
He blinks at me for a moment and then his face lights up with a smile that I haven't seen before. "Are you sure?"
"That's not the question to ask me," I tell him. "Ask me the other one."
His voice drops to a whisper. "Who would you want if you could have anyone in the world, Duo?"
"You. Always you. So take me home, hm?"
