Were Pirates

Heero eased himself into the next shadow and waited, barely breathing, his eyes on the sliver of light that gleamed under the door at the end of the hallway. The sun had slipped over the horizon, the light was dimming, darkening the hallway even more.

Only a few more steps. Months of work, trying to figure out where the ringleaders of the smuggling ring were based, weeks more of convincing Une that he alone be sent in on the job. She wanted him to take backup- he had insisted back up would just scare off the targets.

No need to tell her the real reason.

He tilted his head, inhaling swiftly- the scent he'd caught in the alleyway outside was stronger here. Tantalizingly familiar, it made him dizzy for a moment. There weren't any other recent scents.

Good... that meant his target was alone...

He moved closer to the door, stalking silently, even though he knew the other had to be aware of his presence by now.

Sure enough, as he reached the door, that familiar, irritating, much-missed voice sounded from the other side.

"Are you going to stop sulking in the hallway sometime tonight? I haven't got all evening you know."

Heero pushed the door open, holstering his gun as he shook his head at the man on the other side. "It's still ten minutes until official moon rise."

Duo sighed. "I was hoping it wouldn't come to this." He got to his feet, his braid swinging slightly. Heero frowned as he caught a good look at the other man's face.

"What the hell happened to your eye?"

Lifting his hand, Duo tapped the patch with callused fingers. "Can you believe I ran into someone with a damn silver knife?"

"I told you the smuggling business wasn't the way to go."

"Oh, like serving as Une's lapdog is so much better. Where's your fellow Preventers? Surrounding the building? Raiding my warehouses?"

"I came alone- and you know damn well why I did."

"Challenge, I suppose?"

Heero looked surprised. "Hell no. This piracy of yours is getting damn dangerous, Duo. I know you do good work- I know where your profits go- but the Sphere isn't going to tolerate it for much longer."

Tilting his head to the side, Duo regarded Heero thoughtfully. "That almost sounds believable...."

"You honestly think I'm here to Challenge you?" Heero rolled his eyes. "It would be easier to just load a rifle with a silver bullet and take you out from a distance than face you at moon rise."

"But not as honorable."

"I never claimed to be honorable. That was Chang."

"But you refused to stay with me."

"Because I knew this wasn't the way to go. I did try to convince you to stay with me- if you remember."

Duo's teeth flashed in the dim light as he grinned. "I do- but I didn't feel like being domesticated."

Sighing, Heero glanced at the window. It was nearly time. "You are going to force the damn Challenge, aren't you? Fucking J, why he and the others came up with the stupid thing..."

"Because he knew we were all too damn dominant to back down." Duo slid around his desk, moved closer to Heero. "Don't you remember....?"

Heero closed his eyes for a moment, dizzy with Duo's scent. "I try not to..."

A warm mouth brushed his then moved away before he could catch hold. "Since the Challenge is mine... then I make the rules...."

Opening his eyes, Heero let his lips curve slightly. "That's true."

"Winner gets to choose the life? Preventer or Pirate?"

"Agreed- and the form?"

"It's tag-" Duo shoved out at him, and Heero flew backwards into the wall with a thump. "You're it." Duo's form blurred and a moment later a large gray wolf leapt from the window.

Heero pushed himself upright and let the change wash over him. A moment later, he bounded out of the window, hot on Duo's trail.

Now this was going to be a challenge...
