Valentine Drabble 2
Wufei leaned in the door of our office. "Any big plans tonight gentlemen?"
I just snorted at him and continued typing. Duo laughed. "Not like yours. Are you sure you're ready for this big step?"
"It's a first date Duo, I think I'll be fine." He rolled his eyes and vanished down the hallway. I looked up from my computer.
"Do you have any big plans tonight? Anything I need to know about?"
Duo knew what I was asking. "Nope. Things have been quiet lately."
I had to smile. "Yeah, it's like the criminals have realized that there's hell to pay if they're caught breaking the law."
Duo chuckled. "Can't imagine what gave them that idea. How about you? Anything I can help you with?"
"Not a thing. All quiet on the western front."
"Well," Duo paused and leaned over his desk. "That's not quite what I meant. Remember that talk we had a month or so ago?"
"The one that happened after midnight?" I wondered what he was getting at.
"No, before that. Where I told you that you needed to get out more. Meet new people. Not be alone so much."
Oh. That talk. "Duo- I told you- I'm fine with the way things are." It wasn't true, but he didn't need to know that.
"Really?" He looked at the door of our office and back at me.
"Duo- we talked about this. I can't change the way I feel-"
"So you do still feel that way?"
What was the point of this? "I can't. I'm sorry-"
He lifted up his hand and I stopped. Getting to his feet, he went and shut the office door, then turned back to me. "I have to confess something."
"What's that?"
"I lied to you. It wasn't that I didn't- but that I thought I couldn't. You know, with the night job and all..."
It took a minute for me to get it. "The night job doesn't bother me Duo."
"I know. You've got your own after all." He smiled. "So, since that's not really an issue anymore... I was wondering if we could go out to dinner tonight?"
I couldn't help smiling back. "I'd really like that. Should I pick you up?"
He grinned and shook his head. "Nah, let's take the bike."
