Turbulence Part 1

The man across from him wasn't asleep, Duo realized. He was, in fact, scared to death. As the plane performed another small drop, he watched the man's hands tighten on the arms of his seat and his lips form a shaky prayer.

Duo briefly considered leaning across the aisle and saying something comforting, but considering the man had to be twice his size and already jumpy, gave it up as a bad idea. If he startled the guy he might end up getting punched- and arriving with a bruise on his face wouldn't start things off right.

Besides, the flight was almost over. He glanced out the window- sure enough- he could see the landing gear unfolding from beneath the wings. Frowning at the laboring propellers, he wondered what had possessed Heero to go so far from civilization.

Well, to be honest, he knew what had inspired Heero. He just didn't like thinking about it. He rubbed his fingers over the ring on his left hand. Heero hadn't ever asked for it back, he told himself. Even when things had gotten rather... rough.

The plane did another drop and recover, making Duo curse under his breath and the man across from him whimper.

"Nearly there, mate," he said aloud. The man gave no sign that he'd heard Duo, his lips still moving silently.

Banking sharply, the plane began its descent and Duo decided to find out who had given the pilot his license and shoot them. Not to kill, of course, just to make a point. It was as if the guy had just discovered the island- a little to his left- and decided to just head right for it.

The plane bounced a bit as it touched the ground, causing another curse to rise to Duo's lips. Finally- finally- they came to a stop beside a small building that scarcely looked large enough to be called a house, let alone an airport. A portable set of stairs was wheeled over, the pale looking flight attendants opened the doors and assisted the passengers off the plane.

Duo set his duffel on his shoulder and headed down the aisle to the door. He hadn't told Heero he was visiting- hadn't even told him that he knew where Heero was hiding. They had exchanged a few painfully short emails since Heero's departure- but in none of them had they even discussed why Heero had left in the first place.

Well, they would now. Duo thought grimly. Sure, there was going to be some friction ahead- and maybe a worse ride than the one he'd just survived. But it didn't matter.

Some things were just meant to be.
