Tree Shopping
Heero looked at the tree Duo had pointed out to him and frowned. "Why that one?"
"You don't like it?" Duo pouted.
"Duo- it's kind of...um... stunted looking don't you think?"
"It's a dwarf breed! They don't get big!"
"There's a lot of leaves missing..."
"It's fall!"
"Not for two more months it's not." Heero frowned. "And what kind of fruit is it supposed to produce?"
Duo squinted at the tag. "Something pink? No... red!"
"What kind of something red?"
"Roundish? An apple! No... maybe a plum... or some kind of grapefruit? Maybe the red stuff is the middle...? Though maybe it's more orangey-colored...?"
"So we don't know what kind- if any- fruit this tree will produce."
"Well, it will have some kind. There's no need to be picky about it."
"Duo- do I have to remind you that you don't like grapefruit? What will you do if it produces grapefruit?"
"Learn to like it- or give it away."
Heero tilted his head to the side and sighed. "Why this tree?"
"Cause it's the only one left! How do you think it feels all by itself over here? No one wanted it. I'll bet no one looked at it. It just needs some attention and I'm sure it will grow up to be a great tree."
Heero had to smile. "All right. We'll take it home. But don't blame me if it produces some roundy fruit no one can identify."
Duo kissed him. "It will be a great tree! You'll see!"
Years later, Heero had to admit Duo was right.
