Three Wheelin'

"Oh- and I picked up my new bike today," Duo added.

I nearly ran the car into the side rail. "What?" I gasped into the headset. "Already? But..."

"The insurance check came in," Duo interrupted. "I knew what I wanted and I knew the dealership had one. I didn't want to wait."

If I hadn't been heading down the highway in rush hour traffic I think I would've closed my eyes and counted to ten. Instead, I forced myself to take a deep breath. Yelling at Duo was not the answer. I searched for something to say other than 'what the hell were you thinking?!'

I heard a small huff of breath on Duo's end. "Heero, you know as well as I do that when a horse throws you you're supposed to get right back on."

"Unless it nearly kills you," I countered without thinking.

Another huff. "It didn't nearly kill me..."

I bit my tongue, reminding myself that Duo had not seen his accident- he hadn't even been aware for most of it since he'd been knocked unconscious halfway through... I had been the one that had watched his bike hit that rock, watched as the bike flipped, watched him skid through two lanes of traffic and go over the edge... If he'd been twenty feet more along the freeway it would've been a drop of over 100 feet instead of eight... as it was I'd thought Duo was dead when I'd reached him- the bike was twisted and broken- Duo hadn't been much better... his blood was everywhere...

I had pulled off his helmet and searched for a pulse... his blood staining my fingertips...

The image was so overwhelming for a moment that I nearly rear-ended the car in front of me. The driver honked indignantly.

"Heero!" Duo snapped. "Stop that! Focus on your driving- you won't be able to come home and yell at me if you get in an accident!"

I managed a weak laugh. "Then maybe you'd understand why I'm worried..."

"I do understand it- I truly do. Really. But I'm not going to let one little crash keep me off a bike forever."

True. Duo was not a coward. "I know.... I just... I wasn't ready for it."

"I know- but I am." His voice softened. "Almost home?"

"Just about."

"Okay, I'll see you when you get here. Drive safe!" The phone clicked in my ear and I pulled the headset off.

Another bike. Why couldn't Duo find a safer hobby? Like skydiving?

I pulled the car into the garage and glanced at the other spaces. Duo's car- beyond that two tarp-covered shapes... I had sold my bike after Duo's accident- I hadn't wanted to ride it. Duo had insisted on bringing the wreck of his home- I had thought he was going to try and fix it- a project that would've kept him off of it for a long time...

Why a new one?

I went to the tarp covered bikes and pulled the cover off of the old bike. Twisted and broken- it hardly resembled the sleek machine it had been...

"I should sell it for scrap," Duo said from behind me. "But I didn't want to get rid of it."

"A memento?" I asked without turning around.

"We had some good times with that bike." Duo's arms slipped around my waist. "Don't you remember? Back when we first started dating and I'd pick you up on it? Or even after you got yours and we'd go touring?"

I nodded. "I know."

"I was kinda disappointed when they finally let me come home from the hospital and I realized you had sold yours." His arms squeezed me briefly.

How to tell him that after spending 48 hours in the hospital with him before being sent home with Wufei that I had come home and broken down at the sight of my bike? Some kind soul had brought it back- but it still had Duo's blood on the wheels... on the saddlebags where I had dug for my cel phone...

I had nearly taken a sledgehammer to the damn thing...

Duo pulled the tarp from my hands, covered up the wreck of his bike. "Let me show you the new one." He turned me around and whipped the tarp off the bike.

I blinked. It was not what I had been expecting...

Impossibly, I felt a smile curve my lips. "Duo- that's... it's... what the hell is that?" The bike was neon blue with sparkling purple flames- an eyewatering combination of colors. There were two back tires with something that looked a lot like the back end of a car wedged between them, with a double seat on top. It looked reassuringly solid.

"A trike!" He lifted an eyebrow at me. "A classic one, I'll have you know. Built on a VW chassis- very stable." He slung his leg over the bike and patted the place behind him. "And as you can see, it fits two..."

I sat down behind him and put my chin on his shoulder. "You can't maneuver as well on this one..."

He smiled. "Nope, but that will help me keep my speed down." He turned his head and kissed my cheek. "Plus, I can keep you right next to me the whole time."

"A bonus," I agreed, heart considerably lighter. Silly, but this bike looked safer- and I would be right next to Duo if anything happened... I wouldn't be watching again...

He chuckled and swiveled in his seat so he was facing me. "So... what say we see how stable this thing really is?"

"I'll have to change if you plan on taking it for a test drive." I said and moved to stand up.

Duo caught my tie, pulling me back down onto the seat. "You don't have to change..." He smirked and reached for my zipper. "Not for the test drive I had in mind...."
