Something Furry: Fireworks

Bookbyte asked for the first time Duo saw fireworks. I went for a slight twist on that- magical fireworks.

Heero had been dusting the bookshelves when the floor of the shop suddenly shook. He cast a quick worried glance towards the door of the workroom. The mage light over the door was blinking, but a moment later it glowed a comforting green, indicating that whatever happened wasn't potentially damaging.

Silently thanking whatever deity had made sure that there were no customers in the shop, Heero resumed his dusting, still very aware of the door. He'd requested that Wufei take over most of Duo's magic training since the dragon had centuries of experience, and yet at the same time, he wished that he had just done it himself. Then he wouldn't be out here in the shop worrying about what was happening behind the door.

"You couldn't train him today anyway, Heero," Sally said as she stepped out from the backroom with a box of books for the shelf. "Have you forgotten what today is?"

Heero shook his head. "Of course I haven't. How could I? You've only been reminding me once or twice a day for the last month."

Sally laughed at his expression. "I know, I know, but I've been under a bit of pressure from everyone else on the street. After all, last year you were out of commission and the Smoke Shop guys had to take over."

"Hey, I thought all the glowing smoke dragons were pretty awesome."

"They wrecked the air quality for a month," Sally reminded him as she put the box down beside him. "Don't worry- things are going fine in there. See?"

The door to the workroom opened. Seeing that his mate was indeed in one piece and not at all singed, Heero relaxed a little. "How did it go?"

"I made a little mistake," Duo turned slightly red as he joined Heero by the bookcase, bending down to scoop out the books from the box.

"A normal little mistake," Wufei leaned against the counter as Duo started to shelve. "A little transposition of marks, nothing major."

Heero relaxed and managed a smile for his mate. "I did that often."

"Wufei told me that," Duo smiled and leaned against him a little as he worked. "Still, I wish I was better at all of this..."

"You're doing fine," Wufei reassured him and then smirked at Heero. "Isn't it time for the show?"

"Almost," Heero sighed and folded up the dust cloth. "You know, I'm sure you would be way better at me than this- I mean, you could just fly around up there and breathe -"

"I'm not a firework."

"If you did transform, we wouldn't even have to set up a grill for the food..." Sally grinned as Wufei sent an annoyed puff of smoke her way.

"Anything I cooked would be well-done- including young people with no respect for their elders." Wufei sent a spiral of smoke towards the ceiling. "Speaking of which- shouldn't you all be getting ready to close shop for the evening?"

Duo stood beside Sally on the street corner. Once a year, she explained, the local businesses had a party- a sort of street fair with food, music, dancing- and a fireworks show. It was in honor of some local hero from the early days of the street. No one was very clear on what he'd done, only that once a year; there was a party for him. Duo suspected it was simply an excuse to have a party.

He nibbled on the strange fruit Sally had bought him, some sort of melon, grilled and sprinkled with salt, and kept his eyes on his mate. Heero was standing on a nearby platform, talking with a few of the fae.

"Have you seen fireworks before, Duo?"

Duo nodded. "The Pride uses them for celebration after fights sometimes- but they weren't magical ones. Heero's using magic for his right?"

"Right," Sally's smile was warm. "Wait til you see them. It looks like he's about to start."

Heero had stepped into the center of the stage and around them, the crowd fell silent. One of the bands continued to play, the music echoing across the streets.

The first burst of color across the sky pulled a dazzled exclamation out of the crowd. Duo's mouth dropped open. He was used to quick bursts of color that sparked and fizzled. Heero's fireworks glowed and moved, dancing across the sky, diving down to swirl around the crowd, drawing living rainbows among them.

The fireworks were amazing and for a few minutes, Duo couldn't stop watching them. But then, as a twist of lemon yellow light twirled among the crowd, he caught sight of his mate, standing on the platform, lit up by all the fireworks around him. Duo's breath caught in his throat.

He was so beautiful.

Sally nudged him hard in the ribs. He blinked as she laughed merrily. "Let him finish the fireworks show before you pounce on him," she teased and he felt his face warm.

"Sally-" he protested and she laughed again.

"Trust me, he'll want to leave right after anyway. He hates having a fuss made over him. Once it ends, grab him and go home." She winked and he sighed. Having a psychic boss was embarrassing sometimes.

Not that he wasn't going to take her advice...
