To the Stars

Heero sat on the window ledge and watched as the sun rose, its light blotting out the stars. He knew his mother would be in to wake him up soon, he should at least climb back in bed and pretend that he hadn't sat up all night.

He rubbed his eyes and sighed, turning his gaze away from the bright sky. Across the top of his dresser models of spaceships were scattered, a few hung from the ceiling. Duo had given him one every year since he'd moved in next door...

Duo.

He closed his eyes and groaned. Why? Why after all this time had he messed up like that? He'd managed to hide his feelings for years... and now... now he'd screwed everything up. Duo would never forgive him. All of their plans were now so much dust...

He bit his lip. Sometime today he was going to have to break to his parents that he wasn't going to be attending MIT in the fall... He and Duo had both gotten accepted, had planned to go through the aeronautics program together, applied for housing, everything...

And he'd ruined it.

He hadn't meant to... Yesterday as he had walked home from school, Duo beside him talking excitedly of the ceremonies, parties and general celebrations that were planned, he'd been happy. Good things were happening and he was excited- if only he could blame that!

Could he blame it on excitement?

No... if he'd thought of it yesterday- right after it happened- when Duo was still looking at him, his eyes wide and shocked. If he'd just apologized, blamed his actions on the day, blustered through... instead of turning tail and running like a scared rabbit.

That last thought made him turn his eyes away from the spaceship models to the bunny that sat on his nightstand. Bunny. The reason he'd trusted Duo right from the start... Duo had saved Bunny for him.

He looked back out the window, up at the bright sky. Long ago he used to look up there and wish that his real family would come for him... now he wasn't sure they weren't more than childish fantasies. Though he still had odd dreams of red sand, still felt out of step with everyone...

Except for Duo.

He looked down at the swing set in Duo's backyard. They had sat on it yesterday, swinging idly back and forth, talking about their plans for the summer, for college... and right in the middle of a sentence he'd leaned over and kissed Duo.

Why? Why then? What had he been thinking?

He hadn't been thinking- that was the problem.

He heard a faint noise from downstairs. His parents were no doubt up and moving around. Today was a big day after all...

How was he going to make it through? How could he go to graduation and pretend like everything was okay? Duo would most likely avoid him. What would their parents say? Had he told his parents what happened?

Heero covered his face and groaned. Maybe he should just slip out and run- didn't matter where...

His door slammed open and he looked up in surprise.

Duo stood in the doorway. "Up already?" He grinned. "I was hoping to get to toss this on you." Duo brandished a full glass of water at Heero and Heero heard his mother giggle in the hallway. Duo laughed. "Did you forget we're going out to breakfast?"

Heero heard his mother's footsteps move down the hallway as Duo put the water down beside the bed and closed the door. Duo's grin vanished. "You look like hell."

"Didn't sleep," Heero said and bit his lip. Were they going to pretend nothing had happened? Was Duo going to let him off that easy?

"Not smart," Duo joined him by the window. "We've got a huge day ahead of us- you're going to crash hard tonight."

"Suppose so." Heero summoned up a smile. "So is everyone waiting on me?"

Duo shook his head. "Nah, they're all still getting ready. I just came over to talk to you before the chaos started."

Heero's stomach flipped. Maybe Duo wasn't going to leave it... Maybe he was just going to make nice for today...

"Heero," Duo reached out a hand, "don't look like that. I'm not mad about yesterday. You... just caught me by surprise. I was going to come talk to you last night, but my parents came home and all my aunts were with them and I couldn't leave."

"You aren't?" Thank god. Maybe their friendship was salvageable.

Duo shook his head. "Nah. I've wanted to do that for years."

He... what?!

Duo chuckled at the expression on Heero's face and then leaned down to brush a kiss across Heero's mouth. "Yep. So don't worry anymore okay?"

"Okay," Heero reached up and pulled Duo close again. "Still going to take me to the stars?"

"Farther," Duo promised.
