I walked into the club and scanned that night's prospects. No, No, definitely not... ah, there was one. A lovely blonde in yellow with a feather fastened in her hair.
The dress was very low cut, and high cut for that matter... she looked like someone out fishing, just like I was. But when I sat next to her and offered to buy her a drink, she took one look at me and burst into tears.
Usually that comes later in my relationships, so I was a little startled. I did manage to beat a hasty retreat to the other end of the bar.
Another blonde was perched at that end, one I had dismissed as 'too expensive' when I had walked in. She was in dark red, only a bit of leg showing, but the dress was cling-wrap tight.
"Hey there," she gave me a smile over the rim of her martini glass. "You look a little stunned."
"Women don't usually cry when they look at me," I explained. She smiled and patted the stool next to her.
"Don't take it personally sweet, that's just Lena. You're young, hot, Asian... it was almost guaranteed you'd set her off. I guess you haven't been in this bar before?"
"First time," I admitted and signaled to the bartender. The young man behind the bar came over immediately. "Jack and coke please."
"Put his drink on my tab, Trowa-dear," said the blonde next to me. "I need to apologize for my cousin's odd behavior."
Lena- at the other end of the bar now had her head down on her arms and was sobbing. No one seemed disturbed by the sight and I wondered why.
"Thank you, Miss..." Diplomacy seemed the best way to go here.
"Dorothy. Just Dorothy. And you are...?"
"Wufei Chang," she extended a hand to me and I raised it to my lips.
"Just charming," she sparkled at me for a moment.
Trowa-dear brought my drink and my eyes turned back to the sobbing girl.
"I suppose you think we're being too hard on her?"
"I don't know anything about it..."
"I'll tell you about it, if you'd like to hear," she offered with a smile. "It's a romantic story, of a sort."
"I'm always ready to hear one of those," I smiled back at her and she twinkled at me.
"Well, then, let me get started....
Heero Yuy was the Perfect Bartender. He knew the recipe of every drink. He could make a customer think that he was attentively listening to their hard luck stories with just a single 'Hn'. He kept the glasses full, the patrons happy, and the bar neat.
He was also incredibly gorgeous.
He was just a pure delight to look at; rumor had it that he got the job on looks alone. The owner was sure women would come to the bar just to look at him, and some did- but looking was all they ever got to do...
Heero was also the Perfect Gentleman, which made him popular with the male clientele as well. No chance of the bartender stealing their dates, you see?
Most women tried once or twice and then gave up. The only one that didn't was Lena. She was the star of the floorshow they have here on the weekend. She'd sing and dance and men would fall at her feet.
All except the one behind the bar. The one she wanted the most. I don't know why. Heero was only a bartender, with a bartender's salary. Granted, he was a lovely bit of eye candy, but that's not enough to keep a girl going, you know?
Lena tried a lot of things though, tactics that women have used to ensnare men since the beginning of time. We all figured she'd catch him eventually; he was nicer to her than he was to anyone else, and she was very determined...
It was a Saturday night. The bar was packed, people drinking and socializing, and Heero was very busy. Lena was just starting her floorshow when he walked in...
I told you that Heero was gorgeous right? He was- all golden lines, with these ice-blue eyes.
The man that walked in that night was gorgeous too, in almost the same way, powerful and sleek. But where Heero was almost a chill kind of beauty, this guy was warm- all heat, you know?
He was even dressed in red that night, a silky shirt, and then these tight black pants that had all the women wanting to reach out and slide a hand over them. His eyes were what made most of them swoon though, so intense a gaze that it felt almost like a touch- and the color! O!
The owner was here that night. He greeted this guy at the door, called him by name- Duo Maxwell. Mr. Winner gave him a seat right by the stage and took the drink order himself. He gave it to Heero with orders to take it over to the guy personally, and make sure it was kept filled.
Lena was in the middle of her act, like I said, and her eyes lit up at the sight of this Duo Maxwell. I don't know what it was that interested her. Maybe it was the fact he was gorgeous, maybe it was the large diamond on his hand, or maybe she wanted to make Heero jealous, I don't know. Whatever it was, she started flirting with him pretty heavy, singing right at him, giving him side looks, you know the routine, I'm sure.
Maxwell didn't miss her come-ons. He sat there, smiling, as if he was amused, and watched Lena with that intense gaze of his. There were some pretty resentful people in the bar that night, let me tell you. Some girls tried to approach his table, and some men waved some money at Lena, but the two of them seemed to be tuning everyone out. It made some people pretty upset.
Even when Heero walked across the floor and brought Maxwell his drink, he seemed upset. He kind of slapped it down on the table, not really a smart thing to do to someone that knows the boss, and Maxwell did look pretty surprised at the treatment. He reached out a hand to stop Heero, but the bartender just shook him off and went back to the bar.
When Lena finished Duo Maxwell called her over to his table. It wasn't long before she was in his lap, and they were laughing and giggling and flirting up a storm.
That was apparently too much for our stoic bartender.
Faster than anyone ever figured he could move, he knocked Duo Maxwell off of the chair, which sent Lena sprawling too.
Well, Duo Maxwell was back on his feet a moment later, and the fight had started. Chairs got broken, tables went flying, and anyone who tried to step between the two got knocked out- including the bouncers.
Now, there have been some fights in this club before- but this one... well, it ended in a way that still has people talking..."
Dorothy stopped and took a big swig from her martini glass, her eyes wandering over to linger on her sobbing cousin.
"One of them pulled a weapon?" I suggested, intrigued in spite of myself. This story had to have a tragic ending, considering the weeping girl on the other end of the bar.
Dorothy smiled. "You'd think so, wouldn't you? A knife, or maybe a gun... but no. The two of them were on the floor, clothes ripped, bleeding and bruised- and all of a sudden Heero kissed Duo Maxwell."
"What?" I choked on my drink.
Dorothy nodded, a smile on her lips. "Oh yes."
"What did Maxwell do?"
"Kissed him back. It got pretty heated for a few moments," her smile widened at the memory. "And then Maxwell pulled them both up off the floor and dragged Heero out of the club."
Dorothy took another sip of her drink, not hiding her amusement at my surprise. "What no one knew at the time is that they were once an item, had a fight and Heero left. Maxwell had apparently been looking for him."
"So he was just using Lena to make Heero jealous?"
"Yes, poor girl." Dorothy gave her cousin a pitying look. "Still, it's been a week, she should be over it soon."
"Well, at least that explains the tears. And it was a romantic story- of a sort. I assume the two got back together?"
Dorothy shrugged. "So I hear. Apparently they haven't left Heero's apartment for a week, or so the gossip goes."
I shook my head. "That's some serious make up time."
"They both seemed to have good stamina." Dorothy's eyes slid over me appraisingly. "You seem to be much the same type. How's your stamina, Mr. Chang?"
"No complaints so far," I gave her the same appreciative once over, and she smiled.
"Then maybe you can see a lady home?" She slid off the stool and extended her hand to me.
I took it and followed her out into the night. Behind us, Lena finally raised her head and called for another drink...
