The Rider Halloween Drabble
The two men paused, knives still lifted, the girl under their hands frozen with fear.
"Did you hear something?" One of them asked.
"Yeah, but I'm sure it was nothing. Just a cat or something." He turned back to the girl, knife glinting in the light. "You didn't hear anything, did you?"
She shook her head, tears spilling out of the corners of her eyes.
The first man was still unconvinced. "It didn't sound like a cat- it was a clinking noise..."
"It was nothing. Come on, forget it."
Shrugging, the first man turned back to his work- only to be caught across the neck by a flaming chain. Shrieking, he staggered backwards- pulled back towards a figure that looked as if he'd arisen from the depths of hell.
His partner gaped at him in shock, the girl forgotten.
"Run," said a voice in her ear and she did.
The figure at the mouth of the alleyway now had the man firmly in his grip.
"Look into my eyes."
His partner was trying to back away, hoping the thing at the mouth of the alley wouldn't turn and look at him, when something grabbed the back of his jacket and held him fast.
"Don't pity your friend," said a flat voice in his ear. "Your fate is far worse."
And then something was burning him- not his flesh, but inside... it felt like his very soul was being burned away...
Duo threw a leg over his motorcycle and grinned at his partner. "Now- what were we doing for dinner again?"
"We hadn't decided," Heero slid on behind him, straightening his coat. "You wanted Mexican- from that spooky little place down on 9th?"
"Spooky?" Duo echoed, one eyebrow lifting in derision. "It's not spooky, it's historical."
"Whatever. As long as you let me get the carne asada tacos."
"It's a deal." Duo gunned the bike and Heero put his arms around Duo's waist.
Behind them, in the dark alleyway, two men lay groaning on the cold cement...
