Revelation
The officer slid the door to the cell open and grinned at me. "They're all yours."
I rolled my eyes back at him. "I'm thrilled, believe me." He chuckled as I stepped into the cell and eyed the two inhabitants. "Good morning gentlemen. Had a pleasant evening?"
Duo, lying sprawled out on the cot, just groaned and covered his eyes. "Morning already?" He muttered and I had to bite down a laugh.
Quatre just tucked himself further into the corner and scowled at me. "Who called you?"
"Une did," I told him and he cursed. "The chief called her to say he'd picked up two of her agents- drunk and disorderly- and asked her to send someone to get them."
"And she sent you?" Quatre growled. I wasn't offended, knowing what I did.
"At least she didn't call Wufei," Duo pushed himself up into a sitting position and squinted at me.
"Wufei is here." I informed him with a smile. "He's the one doing damage control- with Trowa."
"What?" Quatre was on his feet a second later- not bad for a man who had to have a hangover the size of a colony. "Trowa's on L3!"
"No, he's here." I gave Quatre a gentle shove towards the door. "Go look for yourself. I think he's ready to apologize if you are."
A moment later, Duo and I were alone in the cell. "Tro came back?"
"He never left." I reached out a hand and Duo took it, letting me pull him to his feet. "Apparently, he got as far as the shuttle port, had a second thought, called home and discovered that Quatre had left. He's been searching for him all night."
"Damn," Duo leaned against my shoulder heavily. "I wish I had known that."
"I'm sure the bar owners wish you did too. Not to mention the guys at the poultry farm."
"Hey, it was a good idea at the time." Duo let me lead him out of the cell. "Quatre was depressed- I was trying to cheer him up."
"With roosters?"
"It made sense at the time," Duo rubbed his head. "Really, it did."
"I'm sure."
"Well, it was really Quatre's idea... and you know how he makes things sound... and we were depressed..."
"We?" I echoed. Duo just shook his head and then groaned.
We entered the main part of the police station and stopped. Quatre and Trowa were the focus of all eyes- not surprisingly, considering what they were doing. Guess they made up okay. I caught Wufei's attention and lifted an eyebrow. He nodded back with a lifted eyebrow of his own at Duo. I nodded and he smiled.
"Come on," I said and hauled Duo towards the door. "Let's get you home."
He got into my car obediently enough, though when I climbed in, he was sniffing at himself. "Do I stink?'
"You smell like beer and chickens," I told him as I started the car and he snorted.
"Great," he rubbed his forehead and leaned against the door. "What a perfect way to cap off the week. Bet Une already has her lecture ready for Monday."
"I would think so," I agreed, "though I did promise to yell at you for her."
"Even better," he covered his eyes. "Don't suppose you'll wait til I've dozed off?"
I reached out and gently socked his arm. "Don't do it again, idiot. Or next time call me and let me be the designated sober person. That way, the two of you can drink all you like and the chickens can rest easier. End of lecture."
He peeked at me through his fingers. "That's all?"
"That's it. Course, I'll tell Une I really let you have it. Don't give me away."
"Never," he said and smiled. "You really are a good friend, Heero."
"I'm glad you think so." I smiled back and then focused on the road. "So- want to tell me what depressed you?"
"Quatre was..."
"You said 'we'. Fess up Duo."
"You'll think I'm an idiot."
"Duo, if I don't think so after having to bail you out of jail after a night of beer and chicken debauchery..."
"Roosters," he said and chuckled. "I get the picture. It's just... this isn't the kind of thing I think you'll understand."
"Try me."
"Just another round of failed dates." Duo sighed. "I do try. I go out when I get asked- hell, I ask people out all the time, got the full social calendar..."
"I know," I rolled my eyes. "I'm the one who picks your messages up remember?"
"Right... but all those dates, all those people and... not one has been right. Oh, some have been great. Fun to hang out with and fun to spend time with but..."
"But..." I prompted when he paused.
"But not the right one. I want... well, I want what Tro and Quat have... or Fei and Lena... I'm tired of being alone. I don't want to settle... I tried and that doesn't work... but I don't want to be alone..."
"And you thought I wouldn't understand?" I stopped the car in front of his apartment building.
"But..." He frowned at me. "You... you don't seem to mind being alone. You're...content... Aren't you?"
"No."
He looked contrite. "Damn, Heero, I'm sorry. I just never thought..."
"It's all right Duo. I know."
He unbuckled his seatbelt and turned to face me. "If you don't like it- how come you never go out? Never look for the right person?"
"Because I already know the right person."
"But- you're alone..." I had to look away from his eyes.
"So I am. Need a hand up to your apartment?"
He was quiet for a moment and then shook his head. "No... I think I can make it." He opened the door and got out of the car. I kept a careful eye on him, just in case he really couldn't make it.
He was only swaying slightly, so I rolled down the window as he closed the door. "Go get some sleep Duo- after you shower."
He made a face at me. "Thanks for bailing me out Heero."
"Anytime Duo."
That made him smile. "You're a good guy Heero. I hope your right person gets smart and figures it out someday."
I had to smile back. "I do too. I don't want to have to bail him out again."
His eyes widened as I rolled the window back up and pulled away from the curb.
