One Night Drabble 20

There was something missing.

I rolled over, seeking the familiar warmth of Duo beside me, but the sheets were cold. He wasn't there.

Sitting up, I blinked at the clock, willing the numbers into focus, my eyes still heavy with sleep. It was a little after three am. Slipping from the bed, I pulled on my slippers and went to the door. There was no light from up above, so Duo wasn't in his study.

Where could he be?

The chill of the air made me shiver. Flannel pajama pants and slippers weren't enough, so I grabbed a sweater that hung over the back of a chair and pulled it on as I headed downstairs. It was one of Duo's and the faint scent of him on the wool eased my worry a little bit.

I would've heard him if he'd left. He would've woken me up. So he had to still be in the house.

If he was in the garage workshop, I'd be able to see the light under the door. I never disturbed Duo when he went in there, but I could sit in the kitchen, have some tea and wait for him.

But when I reached the bottom of the stairs, the glow of lights from our living room made me pause. I had turned off the lights when we'd headed for bed- I was sure of it. So if they were on now...

Duo was there, seated on the floor beside the Christmas tree we'd put up a few days ago. I'd told him it was all part of our cover- every other house on the street had one. I had lied. I had never put up one before. Course, most of the time I was gone during this season- it was usually a busy one for the Org. This year we were on leave- and well... I wanted to give Duo a normal holiday.

It wasn't like he'd ever had one as a kid. I had at least had a few teachers who celebrated, who were willing to share their traditions with me. So I'd put up a tree, hung stockings, took Duo out shopping- he'd been remarkably patient about the whole thing and a few times I think he was even enjoying himself. I still was learning to read him... hopefully with more time I'd get better.

Our tree was lit, casting a glow over Duo where he sat silently, his eyes focused on the tree.

I joined him, snagging the blanket from the sofa and sitting behind him on the floor. He hadn't bothered with a sweater or slippers, and his skin was cold against mine.

"Heero," he said softly in greeting and let me pull him close. I wrapped him in the blanket and folded my arms around him.

"What are you doing, love? Did you have trouble sleeping?"

"A little," he admitted and curled closer to me. "I didn't mean to wake you."

"It's okay," I put my lips against his temple and smiled. "I think it's sort of traditional to get up early on Christmas morning anyway."

"Is it?"

"Well, I remember staying with one of my teachers and her family one year- and I swear the kids woke everyone up right around this time. The adults yelled, but all the kids went downstairs to open their stockings- I don't know how the hell the adults went back to bed."

"Were you older then? Or did you get up too?"

"I was about ten, so I got pulled along." I smiled a little. "It was my first time staying with a family, so it was all strange to me."

Duo shivered a little and I wished I hadn't said anything. I didn't want to remind him about his family...

"So, you want to open a present?" I tried and he blinked at me, the shadows in his eyes fading.

"Now?"

"Well, it is technically Christmas morning." I pointed out and he snorted a little. I snagged a present from under the tree and put it in his lap. "Here, open this one."

He rolled his eyes a little, but turned his attention towards the present, carefully pulling off the paper and opening the box.

The sweater was plush and soft; a dark purple color that I had decided would look good on him. He laughed quietly and pulled it on. "I wonder why you gave me this one first," he teased.

"You're still freezing," I pointed out and ran my hands down his arms. "I know a sweater isn't the most exciting gift, but-"

He interrupted me, his mouth sliding over mine, claiming a kiss. I opened my lips under his; let him push me down beside the small stack of gifts. He laughed again, his breath warming my skin. "Should I give you one of your gifts too?"

"You are," I told him and kissed him again.
