Misunderstandings Part 1
"I nearly hit you today." Her voice was sharp with anger and a tinge of fear, but he didn't seem to notice.
"Did you?"
"Your bangs are shorter."
He blinked at her, but didn't turn to look in the mirror. "You didn't cut my hair."
"If I did you wouldn't notice." She snorted and dropped down on his bed. "Look, if you need a break- if you want to try something different- you know you can."
"I'm fine, Cathy. Stop worrying."
She bit her lip. He was not fine, but if he wouldn't admit it, how could she convince him to help himself? "Why don't you go see Quatre? It's been months."
Even that name didn't stir a visible reaction. "He doesn't want to see me."
"Oh Trowa, you can't think that! He was angry, but-"
"No." Trowa picked up a newspaper from his small desk and tossed it at her. "You see? He's already got someone else."
Cathy scanned the gossip column, her mouth twisting. "Just because it's here doesn't mean it's true! Look at what they used to say about you two!"
"Used to say," he repeated and sat down on his bed. "It's over, Cathy."
"Just like that?"
He shrugged. "If that's how Quatre wants it."
"Have you tried to talk to him?"
"No."
"Don't you think you should?"
"He knows where I am."
Cathy tightened her jaw and counted to ten. "Quit acting like you don't care and do something! Don't just let him go!"
"You think I don't care?" His voice cracked on the last word and Cathy's eyes widened. "You think this means nothing to me? That it doesn't hurt to read that? That I don't want to talk to him?"
It took a moment for Cathy to find her voice. "Then why don't you?"
"How can I talk to him now?" Trowa shook his head. "I was angry at first- too angry to talk to him- and then angry that he didn't try to talk to me. And now," he tilted his head towards the paper. "Now it's too late."
"It might not be true."
"And if it is?" Trowa glanced at the clock. "Show starts soon. We have to go."
"Trowa-" Before she could finish, he left the trailer. "Stubborn jerk," she muttered under her breath. Maybe she should call Quatre. She didn't like meddling, but she hated watching Trowa turn more and more inwards. The only place he seemed really happy anymore was with his lions, or in front of a crowd... and for someone that was used to wearing a mask on his face- and on his soul- well, who was to say what he was really feeling?
She left the trailer and headed for the big tent, her mind still on the problem of her stubborn brother. Could Quatre really have found someone else? Her hands itched as she picked up her knives- she would call him- find out the truth. If he wasn't dating anyone, then she'd try to get him to talk to Trowa.
And if he was... well, she could always use some target practice.
The ringmaster was starting. She could hear his voice was booming out over the crowd. Moving to the side of the curtain, she waited for her cue. Trowa was already up on the high wire, she could see him moving out to his place in the middle, right where the spotlight would hit in about less than a minute.
She looked away from the wire as one of the other clowns brushed by her, the two of them exchanging apologetic smiles, before she looked back up at the wire. The spotlight had swung up perfectly on the mark, but...
Trowa wasn't there.
Cathy looked wildly around. Where was Trowa? Not on the wire, not on the trapeze, not in the air...
On the ground.
