Mage vs. Guard Part 5

There were mage wards in the room.

Trowa was in the room with them...

All of Trowa's men had their hands full with Duo. Even Trowa was watching them, frowning slightly.

"Don't hurt him, he has to take a message back..."

Heero charged Trowa, taking the other mage off guard. He hit him squarely in the stomach, letting the momentum of his rush carry them both out into the hallway.

No mage wards here.

Heero snapped out an incantation and then lifted himself up quickly. He didn't want to squash Trowa until he got to the bottom of this mess. He carefully picked up the dazed looking frog as he turned back towards the room to help Duo.

Who was now stepping out into the hallway, dusting off his hands and looking annoyed.

"Of all the freaking times to get interrupted." He muttered and looked at Heero. "You all right?"

Heero nodded and winced.

"Please tell me you didn't hit your head again when you rushed him?"

Heero blinked. Had he hit his head again? Only against Trowa's shoulder- did that count?

"Heero?" Duo grabbed his shoulders. "Can you talk? Do you know who I am?"

"Duo."

"Good. Where's Barton?"

Heero lifted the frog up. It tried to hop away, but Duo grabbed it and stuffed it into his belt pouch. "Always frogs..."

"It's the first spell I learned."

"That explains it." Duo sighed and touched Heero's forehead. "Still hurts?"

"Yes."

"Then we'll stay here. I'm sure I can find someone to run to the Order."

Heero shook his head and winced again. "Can't. Frog spell won't last for a long time. We have to get him back."

"You can't travel like this."

"I'll 'port us back."

"But you aren't recovered from last time! And you have a concussion!"

Once again Heero considered the option of arguing with Duo and rejected it. He simply reached out and grabbed a hold of Duo's tunic. Before Duo could react, he recited the 'port spell. Light flared around them and he heard Duo curse.

Duo swore again when they arrived back outside the School as Heero slipped to the ground, out cold.

"This is getting to be a familiar situation," he said to the unconscious mage as he hoisted Heero up and over his shoulder. "I don't like it."

Once inside the gate he was met by several mages and guards- Mage Winner and Captain Chang among them.

"What happened?" Chang demanded.

"We were ambushed by a mage named Barton," Duo said and watched as Winner turned pale. "He was hoping to capture the person who usually does the blessings on the fields, but got us instead."

"Did he- hurt Heero?" Winner asked, reaching out a hand to the unconscious mage.

"Yes- Heero got knocked off his horse- he's got a concussion."

"He's not supposed to 'port with a concussion!"

"Yeah, I tried to tell him that."

Winner turned to the guards and pointed at three of them. "You and you and you take Yuy up to the Healer's tower." He looked at Duo. "You need to go report in to Relena immediately." Duo handed Heero over reluctantly to the guards and followed Winner and Chang.

Relena listened to his story, frowning slightly.

"Where is Mage Barton?" She asked when he finished. Duo reached into his pouch and pulled out a disgruntled looking frog.

"It's always a frog," Relena muttered and Duo grinned at her.

"It's the first spell he learned."

"Idiot," Quatre shook his head as he picked up the frog. "I found out what really happened two weeks after you left. I sent messengers everywhere looking for you."

"And of course Heero didn't know Trowa's name had been cleared," Relena snorted. "He really needs to pay attention in the meetings."

"I think he missed that one-" Quatre shook his head. "Still..."

"Well, all's well that ends well." Relena sighed. "Guard Maxwell, you are dismissed."

"What about..." Duo gestured at the frog.

"Oh, I know the counter spell," Winner assured him and kissed the frog. Duo blinked as a very naked mage landed on Relena's desk. "Ah, it's good to see you again, Trowa," Winner grinned.

Duo headed for the door.

Heero blinked. Leaning over him was a familiar looking face- though not the one he had expected to see.

"Back with us?" The healer asked with a grin. "I'd give you a lecture on 'porting with a concussion but I suspect everyone else will see that as their duty for the next few days."

Heero squinted up at her. "Thanks Sally, now I know to hide in my rooms."

"That never works," she laughed and helped him sit up. "How do you feel? Head still aching?"

Heero cautiously shook his head. "Doesn't seem to be."

"Good, then drag yourself down to your own room, I need the bed."

"Such sympathy."

"Hilde's class is working on summoning familiars."

Heero rolled his eyes. "How many limbs missing this time?"

"So far? Six. And they are just at the low levels." Sally watched as he got to his feet. "Need a hand back to your rooms?"

"No, I'll be fine." Heero frowned. "Did my guard go report in?"

Sally nodded. "I think so. What happened out there? One of the guards said Barton attacked you."

"He did."

"Guess he never got the message about the pardon."

"What pardon?"

Sally looked surprised. "After he left, Quatre discovered that one of his students had set Trowa up on purpose- to make it look like he was trying to kill Quatre. After Trowa was gone, he went after Quatre. Don't you remember? Big mage battle on the top of Quatre's tower? All the scorched stone?"

Heero frowned. "I remember something like that when I came back from dealing with that Nightmare mess..."

"That's right. You missed it- but really Heero," Sally shook a finger at him. "You need to pay more attention in the meetings! Quatre's been looking for him everywhere!"

"Right, right." Heero waved a hand in the air and headed for the door. He was secretly glad he'd only changed Trowa into a frog- coming back here and tell Quatre he'd killed Trowa would've been very bad.

His rooms were blessedly empty when he reached them. He flung himself down on his sofa and closed his eyes. Surely there wouldn't be another job for him for a few days at least. Maybe he could actually get some research done...

"There you are."

Heero opened his eyes as Duo entered the room.

"Did you deliver Trowa safely?"

Duo nodded. "I did. Did you know he had been pardoned?"

"Now I do."

"Good thing you didn't blast him."

"I couldn't think of that spell off the top of my head."

"Speaking of," Duo moved closer, "how is your head?"

"Better," Heero said, and his eyes widened as Duo leaned over the sofa. "What are you doing?"

"We were interrupted earlier, remember?" Duo slid onto Heero's lap. "You had decided to give in?"

"I had a concussion. I wasn't in my right mind." Heero protested, trying to wiggle away.

"You knew what you were doing." Duo moved closer still. "You said yes."

"I didn't say anything."

"You kissed me- that's a yes."

"In what language?"

"Didn't you enjoy kissing me?"

"That's not the point!"

"I really liked it. I've never been kissed that well before."

Heero turned a faint red and couldn't seem to find a response.

"I want you to kiss me again like that." Duo continued. "A lot."

"Isn't once plenty? I don't want to overdo things."

"I do."

Heero sighed and closed his eyes. "Duo- I just don't think this is a good idea."

"Why not?" Duo frowned. "Afraid you'll get too attached and then I'll leave you for someone else?"

Heero lifted a hand and touched Duo's cheek. "I'm already too attached." He pushed Duo off his lap and murmured a quick incantation.

Duo was suddenly alone in the room.

He put his head back against the cushions and smiled.
