Hungry Heart Part 1
"Did you read your email?"
I pushed my bangs out of the way as I shifted the phone closer to my ear. "You called me up- long distance- to ask if I read my email?"
Heero snorted. "Well, it would be silly to email you the question, now wouldn't it?"
He had a point. "No- why did I need to read my email?"
"Quatre's gone."
For a moment my heart stopped.
"Gone how?" Not dead, please not the dead kind of gone....
"He left."
What? "He left? Left what?"
"Everything," Heero said and I wanted to reach through the wires and shake him.
"What do you mean?"
"It's in the email. Are you near your computer? Or can you pull it up on your phone?"
Since I had been sitting down to pull up my email it was easy enough to do as Heero asked. Sure enough- first message was from Quatre's email address.
Dear Family,I apologize in advance, but this is something I feel I need to do. I am resigning my position at WEI, effective immediately. The job has consumed my life, and as selfish of me as it is, I'd like my life back. So I have left to find it. I don't know how long it will take me; so don't expect me to come back.
Quatre
So- he finally did it. I'm so glad - I told him ages ago that he did too much, that the company ate too much of his time. Of course, back then I was jealous of his time...
"Read it?"
"Yes."
"What do you think?"
"It's about time. He should've done this years ago." Back when we were together... I would've done anything for this... If only he'd done it then!
"Duo agrees with you," Heero sighed. "His sisters have already started to panic and are intent on hiring people to find him. They've had Duo trapped on the phone for the last half hour."
I nearly laughed. "They won't. No one is going to find him unless Quatre lets them."
"That's what I said. That's what Duo told them. But..."
"Well," I thought for a moment. "More than likely Quatre is going to keep a low profile. Maybe we should put out a few messages in places he might see them asking for updates? Just a 'tell us you're okay' thing. Then we can tell his sisters that we're working on it."
"That's a good idea, hold on." I heard the soft clunk of the phone being put down and a rush of voices.
I looked back at the screen; let my fingers touch his name. "I'm so proud of you, love," I said softly. "I just wish you'd taken me with you."
Silly to think, but even now, even after all of the bad things... I still would've gone with him if he'd asked.
"Tro? Still there?" It was Duo's voice in my ear now.
"Of course."
"Thanks man. They loved that idea! Want me to do it?"
"No, I'll do it." Selfish- but I want to be the one who hears from him first- if we hear from him at all. "I think I can remember all the things he liked to read."
"Tro-" I heard Duo take a quick breath. "He's not with you-is he?"
"No," If only he was! "He didn't come here. I wish he had."
"Maybe he's on his way?" Duo sounded hopeful. "Heero and I were hoping he'd show up here, but we haven't seen him- and I don't think he'd go to Lena and Fei..."
"I would bet the email was timed. He's more than likely wherever he intended to be by now." That would be like Quatre.
Duo sighed. "I'm sure you're right. I just wish... I wish he'd come to one of us. I know it's been ages since I've done more than send him a quick email. He was always so busy..."
"I know."
"Sorry man," Duo sounded contrite. "I know you do. Well, if you do hear from him- let us know okay?"
"Ditto."
"The very minute." Duo promised.
We exchanged goodbyes and hung up. I studied the email on the screen. I couldn't even begin to think of possibilities- where had he gone? What was he doing?
Pulling up my programs I arranged to have classifieds printed, messages on public boards, places I knew Quatre might check...
Q I understand and I'm so glad. Please let me know that you're okay. T
I could only hope that he'd answer.
