Horrible Part 1

"Anyone home?" The query echoed down the stairwell and Trowa looked up from his project with a slight frown.

"Down here!" He called back and pulled his gloves off. He gave the man walking down the steps a faint smile. "Hey Duo."

His friend grinned back. "Hey. Got your mail." He handed it to Trowa and went to peer at the table. "What are you working on? That ice beam thing again?"

Trowa dropped the mail on a nearby table and shook his head. "No, no. Something new."

"What does it do?"

"I'm not sure yet."

Duo lifted an eyebrow at him. "Dude, you need to get out more. Look, why don't you let me set you up with someone? My latest has some single friends..."

Trowa snorted. "Your latest is a freaking superhero. Last time I checked, the villains are not supposed to date the heroes."

"Why not? It's great fun. He thinks he can redeem me, I think I can corrupt him. It makes for some great chemistry." Duo sat down on the battered sofa in the corner and shook his head. "It beats puttering around the basement and stalking your neighbor."

"I don't stalk Quatre!"

"Oh- Quatre is it?" Duo smiled slyly. "What time does he go out to pick up his mail?"

"Four-thi- I don't know."

"Exactly. Look, how hard could it be to talk to him? He seems nice enough."

"Quatre is nice. Too nice. The guy's a social worker-"

"How do you know that?"

"He told me."

"So you've talked to him?"

"Sort of." Trowa bent back over his project, hiding his face behind his bangs. "I mean, he talks to me when I go to get my mail."

"Do you talk back?" Trowa shrugged and Duo sighed. "No. Never mind. Forget I asked. So he's nice and he talks to you. Why can't you just ask him out?"

"He doesn't seem like the type to want to date a villain, that's all."

"You don't know that. Besides, you're a respectable villain- in the union and everything. You even have an arch nemesis."

Trowa snorted again. "Not like that's hard! You have one too- you're just dating yours."

"Hey! You could always-"

"If you are going to tell me to ask the Golden Dragon on a date, think again!"

"Well, if you won't ask your neighbor...."

"Don't you have something you need to be doing? Some evil deed somewhere?"

Duo rolled his eyes and sighed dramatically. "Well, since you reminded me, I do. I'm supposed to be meeting Solid Steel-" He checked his watch. " Oh twenty minutes ago."

"So you're late?"

"What? I'm a villain, he expects me to be late."

"Since when did being evil mean that you had to-" Trowa stopped himself. "Never mind. You go have fun. Let me get back to this."

"Suit yourself." Duo faded out until only his smile was hanging in the air. "Have a pleasant evening..." He finished and then the grin winked out.

"Door next time," Trowa muttered to himself. "Remind him to use the door." He glanced up at the clock and bit his lip. Pulling off his lab coat, he headed up the stairs. Sliding the blinds to the side, he peeked out of the front window.

Right on time. Quatre was leaving his house, his dog tugging on the end of the leash. Damn Duo anyway- whatever possessed him to get the mail today? Now he didn't have any excuse to go outside and have Quatre talk at him for a bit.

Though couldn't hurt to go out and check the box, right? Just because there wasn't anything in it shouldn't look too weird...

"Too nice," he reminded himself and let the blinds fall shut.

That didn't stop him from going out the next day. Of course, he told himself, he really did need to get his mail, and it wasn't quite four thirty yet, so it totally was not stalking... no matter what Duo said.

Trowa was already out of the house before he actually looked at the mailboxes- and froze in his tracks.

The man leaning against the boxes gave him a mocking smile and tilted his head a little. Cursing under his breath, Trowa hurried over.

"Hello Doctor," the superhero smiled.

"Don't call me that! What are you doing here? I'm not doing anything wrong!" He hissed at his arch nemesis.

"That's just it," the Golden Dragon hissed back. "It's been weeks since you've even tried anything! What the hell is wrong? You haven't given villainy up, have you?"

Trowa yanked his keys out of his pocket and growled. "Of course not! I'm working on something. So go away. Find someone else to bother."

The Golden Dragon rolled his eyes. "You're my nemesis, remember? I am supposed to be confounding your evil schemes. So hurry up and get scheming. I'm bored with thwarting petty crimes!"

"You-"

"Shh! Civilian headed over!" Trowa risked a glance over his shoulder and his stomach twisted at the sight of Quatre. Damn it! Not now...

"So, you haven't seen any suspicious activity anywhere?" The Golden Dragon asked in a loud tone.

"Only by my mailbox," Trowa muttered back, pulling out his mail and preparing to dash back inside.

"How about you?" The Golden Dragon smiled at Quatre, who, Trowa noted, looked dazzled at the superhero by his mailbox.

"Can't say that I have," he smiled shyly back. "It's a pretty quiet neighborhood, isn't it Trowa?"

Trowa, startled at the use of his name, blinked. "Uh... yes."

"Is there something bad going on?" Quatre asked.

"Not yet," the Golden Dragon smirked at Trowa. "But there should be soon." He turned his attention back to Quatre. "Don't worry though, I'm on watch. Maybe I could stop by later and talk to you about a few things you could be doing to protect yourself?"

Trowa bit his lip hard. He wouldn't dare...

"That would be great!" Quatre got his mail and nodded towards his house. "I live right over there! Anytime is good!"

"Then I'll stop by anytime."

"Okay," Quatre turned a faint pink and headed back towards his house.

Trowa waited until Quatre was out of earshot. "What are you-" he started, but the Golden Dragon chuckled.

"Giving you some incentive. Obviously you have quite a little crush on your neighbor-"

"I do not!"

"Right. So you won't mind if I stop by and see him? Often? Unless of course, I'm suddenly very very busy... too busy to go visit beautiful young men who obviously like a man in a cape."

The Golden Dragon smirked again and leapt into the sky. Trowa watched him fly away; wishing that he had an anti-aircraft missile, a death ray- hell, even a slingshot would work in a pinch. Anything to wipe that smug bastard out of the sky.

He wanted some evil to thwart did he? Practically blackmailed Trowa into it. Well then, Trowa would be more than happy to oblige him...
