Family Part 3

Hospital waiting rooms are not meant to soothe people. I'm not sure why, because really, when you're waiting in one don't you need to be soothed? Why wasn't I waiting in a soft-green room with soft music in the background and warm cups of coffee? Why was I instead staring at dried blood colored walls with an inane kids movie blaring from the TV and stale bowls of candy corn on the tables?

Guess it beat the alternative. If I closed my eyes I could see Duo, his body twisting as he fell...

I shook my head, banishing the image. We were at the hospital. He'd be fine. They'd fix him. Besides, wasn't he a gundam pilot? Okay, former gundam pilot? Weren't we supposed to be able to survive all sorts of things?

"Mr. Yuy?" I shot to my feet as the nurse said my name and she blinked at me in surprise. "Mr. Maxwell is just about ready to go home. The doctor wants to see you."

"All right," I said and followed her past the door and into the emergency ward. "Is he okay? Awake?"

She laughed. "Oh yes. Awake and aware. We were worried that he'd given himself a concussion, but the doctor says no. Just opened his head a bit. He has stitches- and we put a cast on his leg."

"Broken?"

She nodded and pushed a curtain to the side. "Here he is," she said and I stepped past her. Duo lay in the bed, a little pale, but smiling, a stern looking female in a doctor's coat beside him.

"Mr. Yuy?" The doctor asked and I shook her hand. "Susan Black. Mr. Maxwell is going to be less than completely mobile for a bit- can I trust you to make sure that he does everything he's supposed to do?"

I smiled for her. "It sounds like you know him."

Duo huffed. "Suzie used to work at the hotline with me." Suzie? I couldn't imagine someone who looked less like a Suzie than the doctor, but then again this was Duo...

"He's got to keep off of his leg as much as he can. Between the broken bone and the wrenched knee, it needs a break. I'll give him a crutch- but he has to use it- no limping around without it even for short trips."

"Understood."

"I wrote down the supplies he'll need and a few prescriptions. Make sure he takes them." She handed me a sheaf of papers.

"I will."

She turned to Duo and lifted an eyebrow. "No straining yourself. Give your leg and that head of yours time to heal. It's going to be bad enough going up and down the steps to your apartment-"

"I can move him in with me," I offered. "I have a ground floor."

I saw Duo's eyes widen in surprise. "But-"

"Yes, that obnoxious animal you call a cat can come too," I cut him off and was rewarded with a smile from the doctor.

"Perfect. I'll just go grab a wheelchair and you can take him home." The doctor vanished behind the curtain and I moved closer to Duo's bed.

"Heero- you don't-"

"I do. I don't mind." I leaned over and dropped a kiss on his forehead. "Besides- I have a horrible feeling that if I did let you go back to yours you'd be sitting on that balcony railing again just to prove you could."

"I wouldn't!" Duo protested and then gave me a sheepish smile as I mock glared at him. "Okay, so maybe I would..."

It was tempting to scold him. Ever since I'd first seen him teetering on the edge of that rickety thing- had it been a year ago?- I'd been worried he was going to fall off of it...

And he had.

Luckily, he'd only broken a leg and not his neck, but...

"Still. I'll be out of your hair in no time-"

"Duo," I cut him off with a snort. "Please. Think how much time we spend together anyway. Moving in with me just means that we won't have to do the whole running home for clothes and messages sort of thing."

He narrowed his eyes at me. "You... I mean... that sounds..."

Sighing, I dug into my pocket and handed him the thing I had stuck there much earlier in the evening. "I had meant to give this to you tonight. To have this conversation under different circumstances, but- well, you always do have a chaotic effect on my plans."

Duo's jaw dropped open and his fingers closed tightly around the ring. "I-"

"No rush. No pressure." I assured him. "I just don't want you to feel like you're imposing on me. Want you to know I would be happy with you around all the time."

I think I might have kept babbling at him, except that Duo reached up and pulled me down into a fierce kiss that managed to stop me from embarrassing myself still further.

"That a yes?" I asked him when he let me up for air.

He slid the ring on his finger and gave me that smile of his that I love the most. "Hell yes."
