"What?" Heero blinked at Relena. "I'm sorry, I think I misheard you."

She frowned back at him. "You heard me perfectly well. You're just trying to get out of helping me."

Heero choked. "Help you? How can I help you?" If anything he wanted to thwart her plans, but knowing Relena she'd get all resentful if he said that.

"It's obvious!" Relena sat back in her chair and gestured at her computer. "I want to ask him out and I need you to help me write the note."

Heero rubbed his forehead and wondered how he managed to get into these situations. Bad enough to be called in to work on what was supposed to be his day off, only to be sent to watch Relena for what was supposed to be a few hours, but was hitting the eight mark. On top of which, she'd suddenly confessed that she had a terrible crush on Duo.

Well, Heero could understand that part- he did too.

But now she wanted him to help her ask Duo out. Heero didn't want to help Relena ask Duo out. If anything he wanted someone to help him ask Duo out since he'd never managed to do it on his own. Having to give his help to Relena made him a bit upset. Still, he decided to do his best. She was pretty and rich and all that, and Heero wasn't sure Duo even liked guys, so he gave in.

"Look," Heero offered what he thought was his best piece of advice. "Duo's very direct. He's not going to be impressed with an email asking him out. Trust me." He didn't add that if he was, then Heero would've done it already.

Relena snorted. "Right which is why the other day when that secret admirer sent me an email, he was very impressed."

"He was more impressed that we couldn't track the sender than the romantic sentiment behind it." Heero countered.

"Exactly," Relena folded her arms over her chest and lifted an eyebrow. "That's why I need you to write the note."

Heero blinked. "You don't want him to be able to track it? Then why even ask..."

"No! That's not what I meant." Relena huffed. "I need you to write it because if I do then it will just be silly and girly."

Heero wondered if telling Relena that aside from the fondness for pink, she was one of the least silly females he'd ever met. Then he decided that she'd take it as a compliment, and he really didn't want to compliment her at the moment.

Relena dropped her arms and leaned over her desk, her big blue eyes wide and misty. Heero felt a faint twinge in his chest. Oh no. She wouldn't. She had promised him not to do this again.

She looked up at him, pleadingly, blinking her eyes for effect. "Please Heero? Please help me? Duo's your best friend. He's lonely- and I can help him."

Ah damn it. Relena did have a point. Duo was lonely. This week alone he'd shown up at Heero's apartment three nights in a row, pizza, beer and rented movie in hand. If he hadn't been sent on that mission to L3, Heero was sure he would've had company last night too. Duo had been hanging around a lot lately- and Heero knew that if there were better company to be had Duo wouldn't be spending his time with his partner.

What had he to offer Duo anyway? He looked at Relena- beautiful, cheerful, a delight to be around. Surely Duo deserved someone like this?

"I don't even know what to write-" he protested and Relena smiled.

Getting up from her chair, she reached out and tugged on him until he sat down. "Look. Just pretend that you want to ask Duo out- and for some reason couldn't do it face to face. What would you say?"

He frowned at the keyboard for a moment and then up at the screen. The email doc was open, Duo's address already in place. Where to start?

Well, it was always best to begin at the beginning.

When I first met you, I thought you were annoying and rude. But then you saved my life and I was forced to look at you differently.

He stopped and considered this. It was supposed to be from Relena. Well, Duo had saved her- and she could always edit afterwards. She had to put some effort into this.

At first you were just my friend. I hadn't had many real friends. Then I realized you were more than that to me.

He'd have to leave out the when of that revelation. Relena hadn't been on that mission. He still broke out in a cold sweat when he remembered the way the warehouse had blown up sooner than expected- with Duo still inside.

Finding Duo safe, though unconscious, under one of the collapsed doorways nearly made his heart stop. He couldn't remember being so happy- or so worried- and then he realized why.

It had been difficult at first, he hadn't wanted to admit that he could need someone so much, but now... his fingers moved over the keyboard...

I find it harder and harder to hide how I feel about you. I want you with me all the time. I miss you when you aren't there. It's like a part of me is missing. I wonder if you feel that way about anyone. If you could ever feel that way about me. I know I'm not like you, could never be what you need, but I love you. I want

What was he doing? Heero pulled his hands away from the keyboard as if he'd been burned.

"Heero?"

He couldn't do this. He ran the cursor over the words, hit the delete key and got up from the chair.

"Sorry," he muttered to Relena and pushed his way out of the room. The outside hallway was clear and he leaned against the wall, taking deep gasping breaths.

He knew he loved Duo. He knew he wanted Duo. He hadn't thought the act of writing it out, speaking to Duo even while pretending to be someone else would have such an effect on him. He'd nearly poured out his soul to someone he knew didn't feel the same way. No wonder people said love made you crazy.

Inside the office Relena smiled smugly, sat down at her desk chair and hit the undo key.

Duo stared at the email in his box, his eyes reading it over and over- especially the last few lines:

Heero wrote this and then bolted out of my office. Check the security cameras if you don't believe me. R

He looked up from the terminal at the shuttle launch times. He'd gotten an earlier flight right after he read the email the first time. He'd go right to Heero's when they landed. No excuses about wanting to watch movies or wanting to hang out, they weren't needed now. They hadn't ever been needed. He'd just been too dense to see it.

Smiling, he selected 'reply'.

Thanks Lena. You were right.

Oh- and that email last week? It was Wufei. I double-checked. Put the poor guy out of his misery and say yes soon, okay?
