So warnings: Scary. Bad things happen to Wufei.
Halloween Drabble 20
"Come walk with me."
I looked into Duo's eyes and felt a chill on the back of my neck. "I just came by to see how Heero was doing."
"I know." Duo stepped out of the house and closed the door. "He's out in the garden. Follow me."
The night was chill, the air damp with the feeling of future rain. "Why is he outside now? He was injured so badly-"
Duo turned, his eyes narrowed. "Are you questioning my care of him, Wufei?"
"No-" I protested. "No, of course not." My heart hurt to see Duo look at me like that. I hadn't meant to give anything away. Not ever. I knew how Duo felt about Heero, knew that I would never stand a chance of separating them, knew that I didn't want to. I hid my desire so carefully- and then Heero had gotten shot and my mask crumbled.
"Good," Duo turned back and headed around the side of the house. "Come on."
I followed, the chill increasing with every step. I had expected Duo to explode at me that day in the hospital, but he hadn't. I had dared hoped that he'd taken my reaction as one caused by the stress of the day.
Why was I now so sure he hadn't been fooled at all?
"Heero's got issues you know," Duo said in a conversational tone. The garden was dark, the only light came from the moon overhead. "Bad ones."
"I think we all do." I tried. "War has that effect on people."
Duo laughed. "Not like his. How long have you been in love with him?"
Shit. "I'm not-"
"Don't lie, 'Fei, not to me." Duo stopped. It was impossible to see his face in the dark, but the icy tone of his voice betrayed his anger.
I sighed and gave in. "Since the end of the second Eve War."
"Before you married 'Lena?"
"Yes."
"Why marry her then? Because she was in love with him too?"
"I love her," I countered, suddenly angry. "It is possible to love more than one person you know!"
"Really?" Duo's voice changed, the anger vanished. "I wouldn't know. I've only loved Heero." He moved then and I followed. "Come on, Heero's waiting."
Waiting? A sudden fear gripped my heart. The darkness of the garden, the insistence that an injured man was out in this weather.
I reached out and gripped Duo's arm. "What have you done to him? Did you hurt him?"
He hit me. Hard, across the face. I nearly fell, but his hand grabbed my wrist and kept me upright.
"I would never hurt Heero." His whisper was fierce. "Don't you dare even think it!"
Before I could answer, he was suddenly dragging me across the grass. "You don't know the things I've done for him!"
"Duo-"
We stopped as suddenly as we started. His hand on my wrist was now a caress. "How much do you love him Fei? Do you think you love him more than I do?"
"How could I know that Duo?" I was too hurt and tired to lie. I wished with all my heart I had gone right home to 'Lena and not stopped here at all.
"I can tell you how." Duo's voice was softer now. "If you walk forward five steps from here, I'll know that you love him more than I do. I'll know you can do something for him that I can't."
The fear returned. "Where is he Duo?"
"Five steps from here."
"Heero!" I lifted my voice, wondering if I'd get a response, and heard a soft whimpering sound. He was still alive- but hurt. "Heero?" A soft chime was my answer this time, the sound of metal on metal. Without thinking I stepped forward, reaching out into the darkness, wondering what Duo had done to him.
It wasn't until I felt teeth close over my wrist that I realized I'd made a horrible mistake. "Ow! Let me go!" What was it? Some kind of dog?
"Heero needs to feed." Duo's voice sounded almost sad. "He won't get better unless he eats."
I kicked out at the shape that held my wrist, but it- he moved faster and knocked me to the ground, his hot breath on my cheek.
"I'll make sure 'Lena's well taken care of 'Fei," Duo said as I began to scream. "After all, she loves Heero too."
