Author's Note: petenshi was a sweetie and wrote me a Halloween drabble, even though I didn't write one for her. I decided to rectify that situation, and so I thought about her posting about watching the fun on that post with popcorn and Merith, and came up with this...
Yes, I do like them this way. They taste really good....
Halloween Drabble 17
"Is the popcorn almost ready?" Duo called as he cued up the movie.
"Just about," Heero called back. "I'll be right in. Go ahead and start." Duo hit the play button and then turned to look at the couch.
On movie nights Heero usually claimed the couch. Duo had been used to stretching out on the big overstuffed chair and footstool. That's how things had gone for the last year and a half, every Friday night.
Except, things were different this week. Friday nights had been movie nights at Heero's apartment. Saturday nights had been dinner and video games at Duo's. Last Saturday, right in the middle of the game, as he had been teasing Heero about bumping his character into the walls, Heero had leaned over and kissed him.
The game had quickly been forgotten after that. Duo smiled at the memory.
During the week their jobs kept them too busy to meet much, other than their usual Wednesday lunch, and as much as he'd wanted to, he couldn't jump Heero in the local deli. So they had to content themselves with sidelong glances and stealing food from each other's plates.
Tonight though, Heero had opened the door for him and then vanished into the kitchen without giving Duo so much as a hug. Was he regretting his decision? Had Duo messed things up already?
He and Heero had a lot of disagreements. They held similar views in some areas, but in others, they were complete opposites. Had Heero decided that the two of them were too unlike to make this kind of relationship work? They had argued over the perfect contents of a sandwich on Wednesday... had Heero decided he couldn't like someone who thought tuna should be mixed with relish?
He stared at the sofa and felt like an idiot. What he knew about relationships wouldn't fill an index card...
Should he take his usual seat? He'd rather be with Heero on the couch...
Heero walked out of the kitchen, a bowl in his hands and two sodas tucked under his arm. For some reason, that made Duo worry more. Usually on movie nights Heero would have popcorn and Duo would have M&Ms. They'd steal kernels and candies from each other as part of the fun, but tonight Heero didn't have the M&M bowl- even though Duo had brought a large bag over last week.
"Duo?" Heero looked puzzled. "Why are you still on the floor?" He sat down on the sofa, putting the bowl and drinks down in front of him.
"Um... should I go get the M&Ms? Are they still in the kitchen?" Duo got to his feet hesitantly.
Heero smiled. "They're here." He tilted the bowl so that Duo could see the bright colored candies mixed with the popcorn. "See?" He patted the sofa next to him. "Come here."
Relief flooded Duo. He got to his feet and joined Heero on the sofa. "Some people might think this is seriously weird," he teased Heero. "I mean popcorn is all salty and buttery, and M&Ms are sweet and chocolatey..."
"They may be opposites," Heero agreed as the opening titles started to scroll across the screen. "But they balance each other out perfectly I think." He lifted a kernel and a candy from the bowl and offered them to Duo, his fingers brushing Duo's lips. "Don't you agree?" He added as he popped them into Duo's mouth.
Duo let the flavors spread on his tongue before he leaned forward to share them with Heero. When they pulled apart again, he was smiling. It was all going to work out.
"They do taste better together," he agreed and snuggled down against Heero's shoulder to watch the movie.
