For Amy Mizuno's prompt.
Drabble 79
The rain was nearly a solid sheet of water, pouring down from the sky, making me grateful that Heero had covered parking at his apartment complex. I pulled into his spot and wondered if the mechanics were making any headway with his car. Course, it was a holiday, so I didn't expect to hear from them soon, but I had a feeling that Heero would be shopping for a new car in the new year.
I quickly unloaded the grocery bags and opened my umbrella. Heero's door wasn't that far away, but in rain like this, I'd be drenched in seconds without the umbrella- and while I would dry off, some of the groceries might not fare so well.
I got to his door, my boots and pant legs very damp, but otherwise still fairly dry. I gave the signal knock on the door before using my key.
"Duo?" Heero was on the couch, looking a little sleep-mussed, his ankle propped up on a pillow. The bruising on his face was a little lighter, but it still made me wince a little in sympathy.
"Hey," I greeted him and dropped the groceries inside before closing my umbrella and stowing it outside of his door. "How are you feeling?"
He rolled his eyes a little as I closed the door. "Pretty much the same as I was when you called a few hours ago. A little sore, that's all. What are all the grocery bags for?"
"It's New Year's Eve," I reminded him as I pulled off my coat. "You didn't think I was going to let you sit here all alone, did you?"
"Aren't you going to Quatre's party?"
"Nope," I scooped the bags back up and headed towards his kitchen. "I'm spending it with you."
He muttered something I didn't catch and then raised his voice: "are you sure?"
"Sure that I want to spend it with you?" I called back as I stowed the groceries away. There wasn't an audible reply. I hadn't bought too much, just snacks to see us through the evening, a pizza and a salad. Snagging one of the tiny bottles of sparkling apple juice I went out to join Heero. "Of course I'm sure."
"But you always look forward to the party," He said, scooting up a little so that I could sit down.
"I always look forward to seeing everyone," I corrected as I made a slight adjustment to the pillow under his ankle. "And this year I really wanted to see you."
He put his head against the back of the couch, smiling. "Duo, you see me every day."
"And I still don't see you enough." I smiled back at him. "Besides, I am very happy that you're here to spend time with. That stunt you pulled with the car shaved a few years off my life, you know."
He shrugged a little and gave me a faintly apologetic look. "It was the only thing I could think to do at the time."
"I know, but... well, even though I've known you since we were fifteen, been your partner for five years and your boyfriend for 6 months- you still manage to surprise me."
"Well, that's not bad is it? Keeping the spark and all that?"
"I guess that's true- though next time can be a surprise trip or a dinner or something that doesn't involve bodily harm to you, okay?"
"Deal." I popped open the small bottle and took a swig, then passed it to him. He regarded me thoughtfully for a moment. "You know, you really can go to Quatre's- I doubt I'm going to be up to doing much and I don't want you to miss a good time."
Moving quickly, I got up and kissed him breathless before settling back down on the sofa. "Heero, love, I think you missed the point. I always have a good time with you. That's why I'm here. Now pass me the remote."
