For Mechante and paranoid pen- I sort of combined what you gave me and based it on the universe in this fic.
So... Zechs pov.
Drabble 65
He stood with his back against the wall, his eyes flickering often over to the corner where a group of young children were playing a game, their excited cries audible over the lower pitched adult conversations.
"Why are you over here?" His sister paused in her rounds, lifting her eyebrows and frowning as she stopped beside him. "Maggie was really looking forward to seeing you tonight."
"It's safer here," he told her and she coughed, trying unsuccessfully to hide her amusement at his response.
"It's safe over there," she countered. "Duo wasn't allowed to buy her anything he thought was fun."
"That's what you said about her birthday last year, and I still ended up with stitches." Zechs shook his head. "Not to mention the fact they are right in front of the yule log. With my luck, I'll end up with burns of some sort."
"Now you just sound paranoid."
"It sounds like you've forgotten the birthday catapult, the Christmas mini realistic helicopter, the midsummer slip n'slide, the Easter Egg poisoning-"
"That was Kathryn's fault! Not Maggie's!" Relena protested with a pout.
"They both were in on it. Seriously, I think you doomed the world letting Maggie hang out with Quatre's daughter. Between the two of them-"
"Millardo!" Relena gave his shoulder a small push. "Go visit with your niece- right now!"
Sighing dramatically, he squared his shoulders. "As you wish, sister of mine. But- you have to promise me one thing."
"What's that?"
"If I don't come back alive, tell 'Fei that I love him- and he's not allowed to bury me in that blue suit. I hate it."
Relena took his arm firmly in hers and guided him towards the shrieking children. "Got it. Where is he anyway? I thought he was supposed to be back from that conference yesterday...?"
"Snowed in at the airport."
"How did his presentation go?"
"You know 'Fei, he told me that he felt his presentation was adequate, which means he did brilliantly. I know the university was very pleased." They reached the fireside group and were welcomed with smiles.
"Uncle Zechs!" A miniature version of Relena zoomed into his legs and hung there, grinning. "Guess what Uncle Duo just taught me?"
"I'm almost afraid to ask." Zechs looked up at the man standing beside the fireplace. "Do I want to know?"
"Totally safe." Duo crossed his heart and grinned. "Scout's honor." The man next to him rolled his eyes and snorted. "Heero!"
"Like he'll believe you after that slip n'slide disaster?" Heero's lips curved in a faint smile.
"Uncle Zechs!" Maggie tugged on him again. "You have to guess!"
"Knowing Uncle Duo? Hmm... how to disarm a security system?"
"Millardo!"
"Hey," Duo looked thoughtful. "That would totally be a great-"
"Duo!"
"Bad idea. At least right now." Grinning mischievously at Relena, Duo added: "I mean, we still have to work on her basic computing skills first!"
"Keep guessing!"
"Sword fighting?"
"Dude, 'Fei already said he'd do that."
Zechs resolved to be far away when those lessons started. "I give up Maggie, what was it?"
"Come here-" his niece beckoned and Zechs knelt down to her level.
The next thing he knew he was flat on his back, his head aching and his niece standing tearfully over him. "Uncle Zechs? Are you okay?"
"What the-" a familiar voice said and Zechs squinted upwards. Wufei was standing behind Maggie, frowning. "What happened this time...?"
Duo wilted a little under his glare. Heero snorted. "Well, apparently we thought Maggie was going to show Zechs her curtsey, but she went for the sneak attack lesson instead."
"It was my curtsey!" Maggie rubbed the top of her head. "He was in my way when I came up!" She turned to her mother. "I didn't mean to hurt him, Mommy! And owww... my head hurts too!"
"How did she even manage to hit him?" Wufei asked in an undertone.
"She was a little wobbly on the way back up." Heero lifted his eyebrow at his boyfriend. "I told you she needed more practice."
"Let's go put some ice on it honey." Relena beat a hasty retreat with her offspring.
"Hey, at least you didn't fall onto the yule log," Duo pointed out as Wufei helped Zechs to his feet. Zechs glared at him and Wufei sighed.
"I'm taking him home before he gets more damaged." Zechs followed Wufei obediently towards the door.
"I'm glad to see you. When did you get in?"
"About an hour ago. I had the suit in my case, so I just changed and came here. I wish I'd been a little earlier."
"I tried to stay away from that corner, I really did." Zechs told him as they boarded the elevator.
"I'm sure you did." Wufei sighed again. "I should've insisted that you come to the conference with me."
"Next time I think I'll insist on going." Zechs took the opportunity afforded by the empty elevator to lean his aching head down on Wufei's shoulder.
"Once you feel better, you and I are going to do some serious training," Wufei murmured.
"Oh? More than just the usual sparring?"
"You have got to start being more aware. Approach every situation with caution- even ones that involve adorable little blonde nieces that you love dearly."
"I know," Zechs closed his eyes and groaned. "I know..."
