The moon was full, illuminating the young man who walked down the street, glinting off his braid and lining him in silver. He paused under the streetlight, leaning against the cool metal, watching the people as they passed by him. A few returned his glances as they passed, noted the cut of his suit, the curve of his smile, the odd shade of his eyes.

Another young man slipped out of the shadows behind him, his blue eyes studying the other man carefully as he approached. "It's a little late for dinner, Duo. Don't you think?" he said with a smirk.

"Ah Heero," Duo turned around and lifted an eyebrow. "You know me- I prefer a late snack rather than a full meal."

"I wasn't aware you were in town."

"It wasn't a planned trip. I relied on your good nature to forgive me for intruding on your territory with such short notice."

Heero sighed. "Got in trouble again, did you?"

"Don't I always?" Duo gave a half shrug. "You already heard?"

"No, I just know you."

Duo laughed. "It's good to see you too, old friend." He stepped forward and gave Heero a brief hug. "Though I wasn't expecting you to be out- like this- at this time of month."

"As we get older, the beast is easier to control." Heero glanced up at the moon. "I already sent the children out- you can join them if you'd like a snack. It's not far from here."

"Alligator?"

"Beef. We have a few cattle farms now. I know it's not usual, but..." It was Heero's turn to shrug.

"Better that than letting the children get a taste for other things."

"Exactly." Heero gently touched Duo's elbow and gestured to a car parked down the street. "Come on, I'll take you there and you can tell me what horrible thing you did that got you banished- for how long this time?"

Duo fell in step with him, sighing. "That's just it. It's not banishment this time- it's exile."

Heero inhaled sharply. "Exile?"

"Well, they didn't call it that, but... they are tired of my 'conscience'. I'm free to join them again when I consent to live as they do."

"Ah. So you aren't planning on going back."

"Exactly. I won't stay long- I promise- but you were the only one I could think to go to- I knew you wouldn't be mad if I came in without permission- but as soon as I can- I'll go elsewhere-"

"Duo," Heero rolled his eyes as they slid into the car. "You are being ridiculous. You are free to make your home here."

"But- you aren't supposed to let my kind stay-"

"Will you abide by my hunting rules while you are here? Will you have trouble obeying our laws?"

"Yes- that's one of the reasons I like being here- you know that-"

"Then you can stay." Heero started the car and eased the car into the street.

"Won't you get in trouble?"

Heero laughed. "No. I've been here long enough that no one is going to argue with me."

"Really?"

Heero smiled at him, a sharp-edged smile. "Trust me on that one. No one will dare object."

"Then I accept- gratefully." Duo's smile was relieved as he settled back into the seat. "Wait- I won't have to live out at one of the cow farms- will I? I mean, I know my sense of smell isn't as good as yours-"

"No." Heero laughed. "We pay people to do that. I'm sure we can find you somewhere else to live- far away from the cows."

"Oh, that's good. Not to sound horribly rude, but-"

"It's all right," Heero assured him. His eyes on the road, he offered quietly: "If you like, you can live where you did the last time you were here."

Duo's reply was very soft. "Can I sleep where I did last time?"

"If that's what you want." Heero shot him a quick look. "But only if you like- not because you feel obligated to- understood?"

Reaching out, Duo traced his fingers over Heero's knee. "I would like to- very much. That's- that's the other reason I came here. I... missed you."

"I missed you too."
