Drabble 38

When Heero stalked in the door, I sank a little bit more under the covers. Hospital linens do not make a good shield, especially not against former gundam pilots bent on mayhem, but I was going to try.

It was too late to pretend to be asleep, so I gave him a little wave over the top of the blankets and braced myself. "Hey."

He dropped into the chair beside the bed and yanked the covers back down past my chin. "Duo-"

"I know, I know-" I interrupted. "But it was an accident-"

"Is that what you're calling it? It seemed more like attempted murder to me."

"Morty didn't mean it- he was just excited-"

"He's not supposed to be outside," Heero reminded me. "Not unless he's on a leash. Don't you remember what happened to Mrs. Hill's dog?"

"Hey, that dog started it! And besides- he's fine now- the limp isn't even noticeable!"

Heero rubbed the bridge of his nose and sighed. "Duo, we have to admit it- that cat of yours is too much for us. I mean, I know you like the breed, but they are part wild after all and-"

"Morty is young. He's like a little kid- he'll be calmer when he's older!"

"Even if that's true- and I doubt it- are we even going to survive his teenage years?"

"Heero-"

"No. Duo- look around you! You are in the emergency ward! Injured because of that demon you call a cat!"

"It wasn't his fault! He followed me out to the shed. He was lonely! It's not his fault that I didn't see him- and really, we should have gotten rid of that pitchfork years ago!"

"How many stitches?"

Oh, I knew this tactic. "Only six- I've gotten injured worse playing basketball with you and the guys." I shifted a little and leaned forward. "No big deal."

"You aren't going to be sitting comfortably for a week."

"Well, that's no different than the time you decided to try that one weird position-"

"Duo, quit trying to sidetrack this conversation."

I glared at him. "Quit trying to convince me to give up the cat."

"Are you willing to compromise?"

I frowned at him. "Compromise how?"

"If Muerte-"

"Morty."

"Duo, the cat was named Death for a reason."

"Morty."

"Fine. If Morty causes one more accident- to anything- you, me, Mrs. Hill's dog, the sofa- whatever, then he has to go back to the shelter."

"How is this a compromise?"

"I'm not sending him back now?"

"I'll accept it on one condition."

"Really? What's that?"

"We get him a friend. He's bored, he needs companionship-"

"You want another of those things?"

"Hey, the book said they need friends!"

"Like what? A tiger?"

"Be serious! Look, we get him a friend- maybe a female-"

Heero put his head down on the edge of the bed and groaned. "We get him a female and we'll have kittens-"

"We can't! He's fixed, the lady at the shelter said so!"

"She also said he was a mellow and well behaved cat. How do we know she didn't lie about the being fixed part too?"

"She didn't lie! She said he'd be a mellow and well behaved cat in the right environment!"

A sigh. "You aren't going to give on this, are you?"

"No," I said, and threaded my fingers through his hair. "Please Heero? Give him another chance? I don't want to send him back to that place-"

He looked up at me and sighed. "All right. All right. Morty can stay. We'll get him a friend. But if you end up in here because of him again- he'll have to go to someplace that can deal with him."

"It wasn't really his fault."

"I know. But-"

When Heero looked like that it was time to give in."Okay, okay. Deal."

"Really?"

"Sure. I do understand, Heero. I just don't want to send him back to the shelter."

"We wouldn't have to do that."

"Really?" I gave him a suspicious look. "Where would you send him?"

Heero smiled. "Trowa. He was saying the other day how much he missed his lions..."
