I'm not sure why I thought this would be a good idea. Did I think it was a good idea? I think I just decided to go to the first place that looked okay. This place did look okay on the outside. Really it did.

I get a drink from the bar and slide into the booth farthest from the stage. What the hell am I doing in a place like this? Okay sure, I had come into town a little earlier than I was supposed to- it was kind of silly, but I wanted to try and spend some time with Heero before the whole reunion thing.

Of course, he hadn't answered his phone and I hadn't told him I was arriving early. Stupid. One of these years I'd get past the damn crush and be able to think when I deal with him. So now I'm in Sanq 24 hours before I'm supposed to be and in a bar that has live entertainment.

And it's not a band.

At least the beer's good and it's too early to have a crowd, I console myself and try not to look up at the mirrors that line my booth, reflecting the stage over and over again. Crap. Is this kind of thing even legal in Sanq? I can't imagine Relena letting something like this exist in her perfect, peaceful city, but then again she's also very into letting people express themselves.

I glance up at the mirrors for a moment. Yeah, that's some expression those guys have going on. Lucky bastards. Course just cause they look like they're enjoying it doesn't mean that they are, though that one there sure looks like he is- and the noises the other one is making are louder than the canned music...

I wrench my eyes away from the mirrors and focus on my drink.

Really, I should've just turned around and walked out when I realized what kind of place this was- but I saw the way the bouncer eyed me- saw his amusement and being me, I couldn't let the challenge slide by. So I squared my shoulders and sauntered in. Hell if I was going to be intimidated. I'd just drink my one beer and leave. No harm, no foul. No one was even going to know I was here...

"Duo."

My head snaps up at the sound of his voice. Heero stands beside my booth, beer in hand, looking somewhat amused. For a moment I wonder if I'm hallucinating. Heero Yuy would never be in a place like this.

But he's still standing there, even after I pinch my arm under the table, smiling and waiting for me to say something. "What are you doing here?" Is the only thing that comes to mind. What? It's a good question.

He smiles and slides into the booth next to me. "I got your call and was heading for your hotel when I saw you walk in here."

Oh great. Just fucking great. "Yeah- I was looking for a place to get a drink. I didn't realize it had live entertainment."

He smiles wider, more amused. At least I entertain him. "And here I thought you had some life on the side I didn't know about."

I snort. "I wish."

"It was a shock," Heero looks up at the mirrors. "I've been here before, but I never thought I'd see you walk in."

"You've been here?" No. No way...

"Sure." Heero looks back at me. "During my missions with the Preventers I've met a few contacts in here."

Ah, that makes sense.

"Plus, there's not many other places for people with similar inclinations to gather in Sanq." Heero shakes his head. "Not that there are a lot of bars as it is. It's very hard to get a license."

Wait a minute... what did he say?

"So, this is a good place to hang out and not worry about getting hassled." His smile fades as he looks at me. "Duo? What's wrong? I thought you knew..."

No. I hadn't known. If I had- well, no, things wouldn't be any different. What is there in me that Heero would want?

"No I didn't." I manage and smile at him. "It's okay. You just- surprised me."

"You really okay with it?" He looks worried and my conscience smacks me.

"Of course idiot." I sock his shoulder gently. "Be stupid of me not to be, all things considered."

It is a little disturbing how he suddenly focuses in on me. "So you are. I wondered."

His gaze is very intense and I look up at the mirrors for a moment. I immediately wish that I hadn't. My mouth falls open at what the performers are doing now.

"How are they doing that?"

"Want me to demonstrate?"
