This one was a remix of an earlier fic, which was based on some supernatural romance novels. There were only 2 drabbles- mostly as I kept getting drabble requests for the earlier fic and totally ran out of ideas. In the remix, I left the boys in a bad place, so I fixed that and wrapped it up. So it's another one for the finished pile. Please remember- romance novel-y and forgive my prose! (This is all of it btw- drabbles and ending!)
Dark Bond Redone Part 1
The musician leaned over his piano, coaxing music from the yellowed keys with a sure touch. He knew his music was note perfect, clear as crystal- but lacking feeling- lacking passion.
He'd been alone too long. Without a lifemate, without a female to be their light, the men of his race fell into darkness. Emotions vanished and the world became merely shades of grey to their eyes.
Duo knew that he'd loved to play once. He remembered the way that his music had comforted him, been his outlet and his passion. Now it was just routine- a memory of what had been.
Searching for his other half had proved futile- centuries had passed with no sign of his light. He'd given up years ago, deciding to hold back the darkness as long as he could, to continue to protect his own against the vampires until he fell.
A commotion on the street outside roused him. He felt it rather than heard it, a desperation- one of his kind in trouble. Wounded and hunted...
What could trouble one such as himself? A Hunter of their kind? A vampire? Whatever it was, he needed to help the other.
Duo rose quickly from the bench and flung open his balcony doors with a thought.
"Up," he urged the other mentally. "Quickly!"
A wordless thanks in answer, and a shadow landed beside him, the sharp tang of blood scenting the air. The other Carpathian was badly wounded. Duo moved to support him automatically, holding the other tightly against him.
"Vampire," gasped the other and Duo cast a glance over the balcony just in time to see the creature vanish into the darkness below. It was not foolish enough to attack two Carpathians. Duo frowned- after he saw his guest comfortable and safe he would track the beast down and destroy it. Something that evil could not be left free to roam in his city.
"Where are you injured?"
"Here," the other pulled his shirt open revealing a deep gash across his chest. Apparently the vampire had been going for the heart. "I was careless-"
Duo heard the anger in the statement and shook his head. "It happens," he soothed and pulled the other inside. "We'll heal you and then hunt him down together."
"Thank you," the other managed as he collapsed on Duo's couch. "I'm Heero Yuy-"
"Duo Maxwell."
"So this is your city."
"Yes," Duo leaned over him, his eyes on Heero's wound. It was bleeding badly. "May I?"
"Please," his guest closed his eyes as Duo bent over the wound. He touched his mouth to the edge, using his healing saliva to close the injury.
The other's blood was sweet against his tongue. It had been years since Duo had tasted one of his own kind.
When he finished he felt a strange reluctance to move away, so he leaned back only a little to look at his guest.
"How is it now?" he asked softly.
"Better now," said Heero and opened his eyes to smile at Duo.
Duo blinked.
Heero had blue eyes. Dark blue eyes that were even now regarding his rescuer with astonishment.
"Can't be..." Duo whispered. "It can't be..."
Heero was staring back at him, his expression no less surprised.
Duo swallowed hard as the sense of connection washed over him. This- Heero- was his lifemate?
But he was male!
Heero evidently was going through the same mental process. "You feel it too?"
"The lifebond- it can't be-"
"A fluke. Some kind of mistake-" Heero seemed to be as confused as he was. "Maybe- I mean, do you think the healing did this? Some sort of temporary bond?"
"I've never heard of such a thing before- but it's been a long time since I've been around any of the others-"
"That's true for me as well." Heero shook his head. "Maybe- maybe that's what it is?" He lifted his hand and placed it against Duo's cheek.
Duo leaned into the touch involuntarily, eyes half closing. Heero's fingers stroked his cheek, warm and comforting.
"Your eyes- I've never seen a color like that before," Heero murmured. "I'd forgotten how vibrant the world could be-"
Without thinking, Duo moved just a little bit forward, closer to his lifemate, the need to touch, to possess rising up inside. Heero's mouth welcomed him, pulled him in, even as a small voice inside him protested. What was he doing? This wasn't right!
He pulled away suddenly and Heero blinked in surprise.
"We- we can't. This isn't right. We're both male. This can't be a true bond-"
Heero nodded and slid off the couch. "I know- I don't know what's happening, but you're right. Males can't bond to each other. It must be some kind of side effect- either from the healing or from the shock of seeing another Carpathian." He didn't sound convinced, and his gaze lingered on Duo hungrily. "I should go- I'm sure this will fade once we're apart."
Duo nodded, forcing himself to remain in place, not to fling himself on the other and beg him to stay. After so long alone, of course he'd try to seize on the first Carpathian he saw...
"Do you have a safe place to stay?"
"I do. I'll finish the hunt for the vampire and then leave the city. Thank you for your help- I don't- I mean- I'm sorry this happened."
"Me too." Duo smiled a little. "Still- for this brief moment- it was-"
"It was," Heero agreed and vanished into the night.
Duo rose to his feet and went back to the piano. He wanted to chase after Heero- but he couldn't. It wasn't a true bond; he told himself and sat down on the piano bench. Heero would leave the city and the bond would vanish. Everything would grow dim again.
He put his fingers on the keys, coaxing music forth- and the piano wept.

Heero paused on the edge of the rooftop- he could hear the music pouring out of Duo's rooms- and had to force himself to remain still. Duo's loneliness, his need washed through Heero and he longed to turn back, catch the other close and never let go.
"This isn't right," he told himself firmly. "It's not. Males don't bond to each other. It's just a side effect of the healing- of being alone too long- something- "
He had a vampire to hunt. That was what he needed to focus on- not Duo's music that called to him so hauntingly.
But before he moved away from the building, back on the trail of the vampire, he sent one wordless caress to the Carpathian below him. He couldn't ignore such pain in one who was tied to him- even for this brief span of time.
Duo's response was immediate- a caress of his own that made Heero close his eyes to savor it.
"We can't do this."
"I can't help it. The music- you- I had to-"
Another caress. "I'm sorry- I truly am- I wish we could- "
Before Heero could reply, something dove at him from out of the sky. He leaped out of the way, up into the air, as the vampire laughed, realizing at the last second that he was too slow- he'd been too wrapped up in Duo to pay attention to his surroundings- and now he was going to pay for his carelessness.
"Heero!"
Claws raked down his back- the vampire had been aiming for his heart again. Heero hissed in pain and turned to confront his attacker.
The vampire was perched on the edge of the rooftop, smirking at Heero as it licked its claws. Heero growled- he wasn't going to let the bastard get the advantage again.
But Duo beat him to it.
The vampire never saw him coming. Duo burst out of the windows and barreled into the vampire, knocking him flat on his back on the roof. Before Heero could reach them, Duo had already pulled out the vampire's heart.
"Idiot," he said when Heero reached him. "He forgot that I was here."
"I think his mind was going- it happens."
"It does." Duo got to his feet and cleaned himself with a thought as Heero called the lightening to cleanse the rooftop. Soon nothing was left of the vampire but a dark stain that would be gone the next time it rained.
Duo smiled at him and Heero had to go through his mantra again.
It's not right. Males don't bond. It will fade. It's not real.
"Thank you," Heero said. "Now that he's gone I can leave the city."
Duo's pain at his words echoed in his own heart. Even if their bond wasn't real, it still hurt-
Before he could convince himself that it was a bad idea, he'd crossed the distance between them and grabbed Duo, pulling him close and capturing his mouth.
"Just this- give me this... and then I can go..."
Duo's lips opened underneath his, encouraging Heero to take what he wanted- but it wasn't enough. He needed more of Duo than this...
"Anything you want..."
Given permission, he dropped to his knees, impatiently pushing fabric out of the way. Duo's fingers slid into his hair, tightened as he reached his goal.
"Yes..."
Duo shivered in his embrace, his head falling back, and Heero held him tightly, Duo's pleasure spiraling through him as Heero tasted the other Carpathian.
When he finally let Duo collapse down onto his lap, he realized it was nearly dawn.
"Stay with me," Duo asked as Heero carefully jumped down to the balcony, Duo cradled in his arms. "You won't make your hiding place by the time the sun comes up. Stay with me- just for the day?"
"Just for the day." Heero agreed, his arms tightening on Duo. How was he going to leave? But he had to- he knew he had to- and Duo did too.
"One day can't hurt," Duo said with a faint smile and Heero nodded. He supposed that was true- but the hurt was already there...

"I have to go."
"I know you do. The message was urgent- your place is in danger." Duo smiled sadly. "I know too, that we've been avoiding the topic these last weeks, but-"
"I know. What we have isn't real. I'm sure it will fade once I'm away from you." Heero brushed his fingers over Duo's cheek. "I wish it wouldn't..."
Duo placed his hand over Heero's. "I know that too. I'm... I'm not sure I really want to find my real lifemate now- if it's not you."
Heero kissed him. "I know. I feel the same- and that's why I have to leave. What if she's out there and needs you? I'd never forgive myself."
"If she even exists at all." Duo stepped away from Heero, putting his hands behind him, trying to let go. "You need to leave."
Stepping away, Heero turned his back. If Duo wasn't his lifemate then why did this hurt so much?
He called up his owl form and spread his wings. He didn't dare look back, he didn't dare reach out to Duo in any way. He had to leave.
Duo watched as Heero flew into the night sky, feeling his heart crack inside his chest.
"Goodbye," the word fell from his lips softly. Going back inside, he closed the door and leaned against it.
How could he go on?
~*~
The message had been urgent- a vampire had appeared in his city. He reached his home in two days of travel- destroyed the vampire in minutes. Even as he called the lightening to purge the heart, inside, his own soul felt as if it had been ripped in two.
He couldn't live like this, even with the best of intentions. He'd hoped that as he got farther away, the need would fade- but it hadn't. It had only grown worse- and if he was this bad- then- how was Duo? The very idea that he'd cause such pain for the other hurt more than anything else.
The night was almost over and he sought the earth beneath his home, his mind reaching out automatically. It was a distance- but he couldn't not try to make some sort of contact- not after two days of silence. If only he'd just completed the bond- it would be easier to reach-
"Beloved?" The pain was worse now- doubled as he felt his lover's as his own. Then- relief- relief at the touch of his lifemate on his soul- and for a moment- joy-
"Heero?" A flash of his joy, followed by sadness. "What are you- how are you- we agreed-" There was something going on- Duo was trying to hide something from him- what was it? Something that Duo knew he'd be angry about-
"I know- but-" The realization swept him- made him gasp in horror. "What are you doing? Why are you on the balcony? The sun will be rising there soon-"
"It hurts too much. I can't- I can't do this- it was supposed to fade- it's only gotten worse- I can't be without you- I'm sorry-"
He wrapped his mind around Duo's, held him in a mental embrace, felt the pain lessen even more- and it only confirmed his decision. "I'm returning to you- as soon as I can. Go inside- wait for me-"
"You- but we agreed-"
"I don't give a damn what we agreed. I'm coming back- and you'd better be there to greet me, beloved- or I'll follow you into the sun-"
"No!" He felt Duo get to his feet, retreat into the darkness of the earth and he breathed a sigh of relief.
"Thank you beloved."
"Just be sure you return to me-"
"I'm not letting you go now." He wouldn't break contact- even now- he held on tightly. This contact would help keep the pain at bay- it wasn't enough- not near enough- but it would help until he was with Duo again.
~*~
When darkness came, he rose out of the earth, tidying himself with a thought and with a mental caress for Duo, he switched forms, flying as fast as he could.
"Don't tire yourself- you have to feed- have to rest-"
"I will- when I'm back with you."
The pain was still there- a tear in his soul- but it was soothed by Duo's presence in his mind. He could tell it was the same for Duo- and he hoped it was enough to keep his lover tied to life until he returned.
"I can't leave you now," Duo had caught his thought and sent a wave of reassurance. He would wait for Heero- no matter how long it took.
"No longer than tomorrow, love. I promise it."
"It can't be soon enough for me- but you're pushing yourself- I don't want you hurt-"
"I will be better when I'm with you."
~*~
He could hear the music as he drew closer, soaring through the air, resonating down their connection. Joyous, happy music that welcomed him- and as he reached the place where Duo waited- the music stopped and his lifemate appeared on the balcony.
Dropping into Duo's arms, he shrugged off his owl form and kissed his lifemate warmly. "At last-"
"I'm so glad you've returned- but you haven't fed-"
"You have- won't you share with me?"
His lover tilted his head back, offering his neck to Heero. "Of course," his eyes closed as Heero's lips touched his throat. Only to open them in surprise a moment later as Heero's whispered words reached his ears.
"I claim you as my lifemate..."
