"I have a favor to ask of you."
Heero's voice was soft, the words brushing against the back of my neck like a caress, and I tensed. Considering what he was doing at the moment, asking for a 'favor' might lead to something I wasn't willing to do. Whatever it may seem like, I'm not all that fond of pain.
"Right now?" I managed, even as he shifted just so, making me gasp.
"You are always a little more," he paused as his hands slid over my hips, his fingers digging into my skin as he pulled me tighter against him, "amenable at times like these."
I tried to focus past the feelings he was arousing. Bastard knew it was hard for me to think right now!
"What is it?"
"I know it's not my night, but I need you to go to a meeting with me tomorrow night." He didn't sound the least bit distracted, or winded, or any of the things he should've sounded. I pushed back against him - heard the soft sound he made- and felt somewhat mollified.
A meeting? That didn't sound so bad. "Temperance?" I teased and his teeth grazed the side of my neck.
"You wish," he muttered and sat up, bringing me with him. I lost the thread of his conversation for the moment as the shift in position distracted me. ".... have to make an appearance..."
"What?" Did we have to talk about this now? His teeth nipped my neck even as his hands encouraged me to set a pace.
"Will you go with me? You don't have to do anything, talk to anyone. Just be there."
"Tomorrow?" There was something important about tomorrow. Something I needed to remember- what the hell was it? Heero's hands had moved again and my brain didn't really want to pay attention to the conversation anymore.
"Yes. Will you?"
Opening my eyes, I turned my head a little to glare at him. We could talk about this later- but the silvery glow from the window caught my attention. The sudden surge in my blood had nothing to do with Heero.
"Can't. Full moon tomorrow."
He didn't seem dismayed. "You can come with me in wolf shape."
"No. Can't control it that night."
A moment later, I was on my back on the bed, Heero leaning over me. "Why not?" I snarled at him and he took the hint. I waited until he was firmly seated again before answering.
"Uncle said it was the half blood- it's always been that way."
Heero seemed content with that- at least he finally got down to the task at hand. Closing my eyes as his mouth found my throat; I thought the discussion was over.
I was wrong of course.
Stretched out beside me afterwards, knowing I was too exhausted to push him out of bed, he persisted. "What if I could help you control the wolf?"
I yawned. Why was he talking now? It was time to sleep. "What?"
"If I could control the wolf, would you go to the meeting with me?"
"Control the wolf?" I couldn't control the wolf. How the hell could he? I covered my head with the pillow.
He lifted it off. "So you wouldn't attack anyone. Just for the night."
Why wasn't he letting me sleep? "Is it really that important?"
"Yes."
Yawning, I wondered what the hell was so important, but I was too tired to push. I did owe the bastard a few. I grabbed my pillow back. "Sure. If you can keep the wolf controlled, I'll go."
"Thank you." He slid out of the bed and left me to curl up in the pillows. "I'll see you tomorrow night."
By the next evening I had recovered enough to wonder exactly what he was planning to do to control the wolf- a leash and collar was not going to cut it after all.
The sun was still going down over the horizon- and the moon was on her way. I could feel it. The air was cool, but not cold, something I was grateful for. I had moved far enough away from the town I was temporarily staying in- it was never a good thing to wake up the morning after a full moon and wonder if you ate anyone you knew. I huddled under a tree and watched the sky. The wolf inside watched too. He wanted to run... soon it would be his time...
"There you are."
I looked up to find Heero in the branches above me. Bastard liked surprising me like that.
"It's still day."
He shrugged. "Barely. Safe enough for me. I wanted to get to you before the change."
Before the change? "You said wolf shape was okay. What is this meeting?"
"Only if you were in your right mind. If I have to control the wolf, then it's easier for me if you don't change." Heero glanced at the sky. "I don't really have time to explain. You'll just have to trust me." He ignored my snort and dropped out of the tree as the sun shrank to a sliver of light on the horizon.
"Trust-" I started, but then he turned the full weight of his gaze on me- and the words died in my throat.
The legends say not to look them in the eyes.
I looked Heero in the eyes, met that dark blue look unsuspectingly, not knowing what he was planning.
My world turned blue.
The wolf inside of me a moment ago had been a snapping snarling beast, ready to run. Now he sat, tame and docile, under that look. If I had been in wolf shape, I would've been stretched out at Heero's feet, throat and belly exposed.
"Come here." Heero's voice was soft- but I couldn't disobey. Couldn't even open my lips to protest. My body moved at his command. He studied me for a moment, his mouth in a thin hard line. "Kiss me."
Again, my body moved without my permission. Even as a part of me screamed, tried to fight- it was futile. Reaching out to him, I brought my mouth to his. "Very good," he said against my lips. "Time to go." His arms slid around me, pulled me close as his wings snapped open.
This was very bad.
I didn't pay attention to the scenery as we made our way to the meeting. I spent all that time trying to break whatever the hell Heero had done to me. Tried to speak, to call him names, tried to lash out at him, tried to kick and bite.
I couldn't do it. My mouth didn't move- my body simply curled itself around his.
What had he done to me?
And... how long was it going to last?
The house we landed beside looked like something out of the old country- it didn't match the forest that surrounded it. Heero let me go once our feet were on the ground, but one hand stayed on the back of my neck as he guided me to the front door.
"Head down," he said softly, and my head bent slightly so all I could see was the doorstep. I tried to stiffen my neck, tried to look up- and failed. The door swung open.
"Heero! At last!" A hearty voice that belonged to a pair of dark red pants and shiny black shoes greeted us. "And your pet too! He's lovely."
Pet!? Indignation surged through me even as my lips smiled for me.
"Yes Treize. The call was for everyone."
"So it was. We all have assembled. You are just in time."
We followed him down a hallway and into a large room. From the corner of my eyes I caught glimpses of others moving around, and wished I could shiver. One vampire was bad enough- but a room full of them meant trouble.
Our entrance caused everyone to move towards what looked like a ring of chairs. Heero sat, his hand guiding me down beside him. There was a cushion on the floor- a pet bed?- and I wanted to fling it at him even as my body sat down beside him and leaned against his legs.
From the corner of my eye I could see another 'pet' seated next to the chair beside me. His golden hair caught the firelight as he rubbed his cheek against the leg of the man seated in the chair. He looked content- and then I caught a glimpse of his eyes.
Oh god.
Heero's hand stroked the back of my neck and I was able to raise my head a bit more. There were perhaps a dozen chairs in the room- and beside each was a cushion. Was this why Heero had asked me to go with him? He needed an accessory?
I couldn't see the vampires' faces, but their voices were a warm wash of sound. I wanted to listen, wanted to try and understand what was going on- but the 'pets' caught my attention. For a brief moment I was grateful to Heero- I was only sitting beside him, he wasn't making me do what that poor woman on the right was doing... and that other man on the left- he was lucky there was a warm fire in the room... otherwise he'd be freezing.
They all looked happy. Their mouths were smiling; their expressions were content... until you looked at their eyes.
Trapped- just as I was. For how long? I had a sinking feeling that it wasn't just one night... and these poor souls were purely human. There was no smell of the other about them...
Had Heero been planning this all along? Was he ever going to let me go? Or would I end up like these others? A docile subservient food source forever at his feet?
Panic seized me. Again, I struggled, tried to break his hold on me, tried to rouse my beast.
Nothing. I couldn't even lift my smallest finger. Only my eyes were free to look around the room- and see my fate.
I couldn't free myself. Heero's power was greater than my will.
But... why had he waited so long? Why wait at all? Why hadn't he simply enslaved me that first night? Did it take trust? And I had trusted the bastard... I had to admit it now. I had even... gotten to like him a little. Considered him a friend... is that what it took before he could catch me?
The voices wound down, the vampires got to their feet. The meeting was over. I rose to my feet even as Heero did, his fingers entangled in my braid. My head bent back down and again, all I could see were feet.
Then again, after the last time I had looked a vampire in the eye I wasn't ready to repeat the experience.
"I was glad to see you have finally found someone to suit even your taste," a silky female voice said to Heero and I felt him tense beside me.
"I was very lucky."
"So you were. One of the blood, bound by a bite. I would bet you didn't even have to ensnare him like we do the humans. Stubborn little creatures that they are. I'll bet this one just fell right in your arms."
Heero chuckled again. "You'd be surprised."
A sigh. "His kind grow rare in this world."
"I know it."
Fingers- not Heero's- brushed over my cheek. I wanted to flinch. "Don't suppose you'd let me have a taste of him?"
Oh no, please no...
"No." I was pulled closer to Heero, away from that corrosive touch. "You know me, Lena, I've never much liked to share."
"I remember," she sounded like she was pouting. "Oh, very well. I'll just say goodnight then-"
A few moments more and we were outside once again.
I spent the entire trip back the same way I had spent the one going out- trying to break free- and not succeeding in the slightest. Heero held me fast.
Never again would I draw a free breath. I couldn't break Heero's hold over me- and why would he let me go? It wasn't like I had 'fallen right in his arms'- if anything I had done the opposite. I had run away, refused to see him, called him names, made him search for me.
It would be stupid to let me go now- and Heero wasn't stupid.
I was trapped.
Heero landed outside the town, walked us back to the inn and up to my room. Was I going to be ordered to pack my things? To follow him back wherever it was he spent all his time?
He closed the door behind him and glanced out the window. The sky was lightening. "Late enough now," he murmured. "Duo- look at me."
I couldn't disobey. I raised my head and met his gaze.
Something snapped- and weakness washed through me.
I sat down, thankful the bed was right behind me.
"Duo? Are you okay?"
"Fine," I snapped. "Not that-" I stopped. Cautiously, I tried to stand up. My body obeyed me.
I was... free? He had let me go?
"Bastard!" I flung a punch at his face and he ducked. "What the hell did you do that for?"
"To control the wolf," he answered calmly, stepping away from me. "I couldn't do it otherwise- I'm just not powerful enough."
I threw another punch. "They called me a pet!"
"To them you are- and it's a good thing too. If you aren't a pet, you are fair game. That's why I wanted to take you with me. They needed to see you. We're bound- but if they caught you without me nearby, they could claim they didn't 'know' who you were bound to and drain you- it's happened before. Now they can't touch you."
Oh. That kind of made sense in a weird vampire kind of way.
I tried another punch. "You could've told me!"
"I didn't have a lot of time- and I couldn't do it right by the meeting. They would've sensed it!"
It wasn't fun trying to beat up someone who kept moving out of range.
Besides, I was feeling obscurely grateful. He had let me go!
I sat down on the edge of my bed and glared at him.
"I really am sorry, Duo. I didn't really want to do that."
I took a deep breath. He did look sorry- not that I trusted that look. "Could you have done that to me before?"
He nodded.
Damn. "Why haven't you then? You could have- I know you don't like our arrangement- and I know I drive you crazy."
Much to my surprise, he sat down on the floor at my feet. "You do drive me crazy. You are stubborn and suspicious and argue with me all the time. It would be a lot easier to keep you ensnared." He grinned up at me. "But not as much fun."
I wasn't sure if I should feel pleased or furious.
"So, I'm an amusement?"
"No." Heero leaned up a little. "You are Duo Maxwell, who challenges me, excites me, worries me to death and who, one day, I hope will trust me enough to accept me as his partner."
I gaped at him. I couldn't help it. He had the ability to turn me into a slave, make me do whatever he wanted- and instead he wanted a partner?
"You are the most insane vampire I have ever met."
"Then you haven't met many."
Thinking about the ones I had glimpsed tonight, I shuddered. "I think I'm glad I haven't."
He reached up and touched my cheek. "Me too." Glancing towards the window, he stood up. "I have to go- dawn is coming."
"You can stay here," I gestured at the heavy curtains. "I might think of some other things I want to yell at you about."
His eyebrows lifted. "You trust me enough to let me stay here?"
"Sure. I guess you proved yourself." I shrugged. "Besides, I have a wooden stake under the mattress. Just in case."
He laughed and stretched out on the bed. "Of course you do."
