Awkward Moments

It had been a perfect evening, Heero thought as he followed Duo across the crowded lobby. Dinner had gone well, the movie had been the right mix of comedy and action... everything had been perfect so far.

Which, since he'd been planning the thing for three weeks, was a relief. It had taken a lot of nerve for him to ask Duo out- the only way he could do it was by having everything already ready to go in his head, as if it was a foregone conclusion that Duo would say yes.

It still had been hard to do the asking... until as he was halfway through and Duo had suddenly smiled and said: "Are you asking me to go on a date?" When Heero nodded, Duo's smile had brightened even more, and then it was easy to explain his plans.

The date was nearly over though, and the part Heero had worried about the most was getting closer.

The outside air was slightly chilly, enough to redden cheeks and encourage people to move quickly, but when Duo turned to Heero with that smile, Heero felt no inclination to hurry. They stopped on the sidewalk in front of the theater and their eyes met.

"I had a really great time," Duo tilted his head slightly to the side, his gaze dropping slightly as if he was looking at Heero's chin.

"I did too..." Heero bit the inside of his lip. Was the date over? He had expected a little more time- thought to walk Duo to his door at least. But, if this was how Duo wanted it... "Maybe we could do it again sometime?"

"I would really like that." Duo seemed to be waiting for something... Heero knew how dates usually ended, it was the part that he had been looking forward to- and worried about the most. But... he couldn't... not in a public place... in front of a theater.... His chest felt tight... he couldn't do this... what if he was wrong and Duo hadn't liked being on a date with him...? His doubts engulfed him and he struggled for something to say.

"Okay," he managed. "We'll set one up." In sheer uncomfortable desperation, he stuck his hand out. "Good night Duo."

Duo's smile wavered a slight bit, but he took the offered hand and clasped it tightly. "I really did have a good time. Maybe... tomorrow night?"

Heero nodded, a faint feeling of relief beginning to rise up. Duo wanted to do it again. "I'd really like that."

"Tomorrow night then." Duo's hand tightened for a moment and then let go. "Good night Heero."

"Good night Duo." He said again and turned around to head down the street.

A few steps and that dreadful tightness was gone. The evening had gone well. It really had. And Duo wanted to do it again...

But why had he ended the date like that? In front of the theater... True, they had agreed, but... Heero had wanted to kiss him goodbye at the door...

He thought of the way Duo had tilted his head, the way his eyes had moved down... focused on Heero's mouth, Heero realized...

When had he become a coward? Duo had said he had a good time. He said he wanted to do it again- and Duo didn't lie...

Without another thought, Heero turned on his heel and pelted down the sidewalk, back towards the theater. Duo couldn't have gotten far...

Sure enough, not that far past the theater, he spotted Duo's blue coat, his braid swinging in a bright arc against its darkness.

He reached out and grabbed Duo's shoulder, swinging him around, taking brief note of the surprise that melted quickly into happiness as he brought his mouth down on Duo's.

Duo's mouth welcomed his, and Heero forgot about the crowd, about the cold, about everything else for a few moments....

"Thank god," Duo murmured against his mouth. "You worried me there."

"I thought you wanted it over."

"Idiot." Affectionate tone. "I was having a terrific time. I wanted it to keep going."

"But we agreed..."

"You proposed the boundaries," Duo countered. "I know you were trying to make it easy if things went badly, but how could they?" He kissed Heero gently. "I wanted to ask you if we could go back to the apartment and talk more, but I was worried it would break those boundaries you insisted on."

"I didn't know... I mean... we're roommates and coworkers and... I didn't want to lose that..."

"We won't." Duo tugged him into a walk. "C'mon. It's cold. Let's go home and continue our date. I don't want it to end at the door like you said, okay?" He shook his head. "I still can't believe you were going to walk home the long way...."

"More exercise?" Heero suggested and Duo laughed.

"There's better ways to get that..."
