This story is based on the song "Piece of Heaven" from the Weiss Kreuz CD, Soulfull Live.

Hello. I experimented with a different style for this songfic. I can't decide if I am satisfied with the results. Let me know what you think, I would appreciate your feedback. Meanwhile take care and have a good evening. Hugs, Karen, The Huntress.

Piece of Heaven

Dancing down from the faraway sky,
David's sword hacks this world to shreds

Deathscythe Hell's thermal blade came around again decapitating one Aries and slicing another in half. Duo tried not to think of the lives lost as shredded metal flew in all directions. He didn't dare stop to consider the Mobile Suit pilots' last seconds of life, whether they felt any pain or if death was mercifully instantaneous. There was no time to do anything but pivot about for another swipe and pray that the barrage of mock human warriors would soon run out.

Though even if we cannot see it,
That world where the angels smile falls to pieces,
And trapped in that eternal darkness,
All mankind can do is grasp at dreams.

Blue-gray smoke is so thick only vague outlines can be seen. Ghostly shapes and shadows mingle with the battle haze until everything loses its identity. Heero strained to pick out friend from foe as blinding flashes from beam weapons seared across his vision. Chunks of soil, some almost as large as Wing Zero, pelted his mechanical counterpart threatening to throw the gyrostabilizers out of sync.

On every side rent metal and fire rained down as if the heavens had joined in the hellish destruction. Could it be that the angels had finally grown weary with war? Had their forbearance for mankind's hatred, his determination to maim and murder, been pushed passed their forgivable limits?

A deafening explosion, a sturdy shudder then nothing but darkness inside Zero's smothering cockpit. The internal lighting flickers in one last vain attempt to regain its power then dies from the damage.

"DAMN!" Heero's frustrated exclamation sounds through Deathscythe's console. Duo straightens leaning toward the static-laced monitor. "Heero are you all right?" he asks anxiously as his ability to see his partner is defeated by a thick curtain of flame-tinted smoke.

Only white noise answers Duo's heartsick calling. No reply from his newly discovered lover, no sound except a tattletale crackling filters through the opened channel. "Heero hold on!"

Fighting to stay calm, using all his soldier's training, Duo walks Deathscythe squarely through the gauntlet of Aries and Taurus swinging his scythe from side to side like the Grim Reaper harvesting souls. Shinigami has one goal...to reach his lover and he holds no pity for anyone or anything that gets in his way. Torsos crumple, arms fall away. Severed hands still clutching their assorted weapons in a circuit failed death grip litter the gorged ground.

Wiping sweat from his eyes Duo finds that searching through his cockpit's grim streaked viewport offers no better clue to his partner's fate. Gradually Zero materializes from the smog. Duo's heart skips a beat then pounds urgently in his heaving chest. Zero lies on its side where its shoulder has plowed into a hillside. Flaming fingers wrap over the outside tapping at the cockpit door, scraping and clawing for a way inside.

A high pitch whine is the only warning before an enemy suit swoops down from above. Acting on pure instinct Duo spins his mecha. In a single fluid motion Duo stabs the enemy suit through the middle, jerks it off its feet and slings it thirty yards then turns his attention back to Zero before the mangled mobile suit finishes its deadly flight.

"It has to be a dream." Duo's mind argues against the picture presented by his tearing eyes. "A horrible dark dream borne of stress and battle fatigue." his inner voice declares hoping to thaw the icy chills clinging to Duo's spine and slow his hammering heart.

At most that handful of love
I'll hide in my heart and journey with you,
That far, faraway, alluring Heaven
Disappears, only an illusion,
Don't cry.

Using Deathscythe's powerful grip Duo easily peels back the warped hatch. Shinigami's avenging angel stand in trancelike silence as Duo sprints over the broken ground. Ignoring the hot metal the God of Death scales up Zero's scorched exterior. Crawling through the lingering flames Duo doesn't feel his hands burn or register his lung's protest as they fill with heated air. The strong odor of burned out circuits sting Duo's nostrils and rankle in his stomach but nothing short of death will keep him from Heero.

And if Duo finds his lover gone, snatched away by the scornful angels, a bullet from his pistol will free him to journey with his soul mate to that faraway illusionary land where there will be no more tears for lovers lost to Death's insatiable appetite.

The peaceful days scored by treacherous tears
Flutters away like so many petals
That melancholy refrain of destiny
Leads the lonely sinners astray

Where did we lose our way? When did the serenity we share fade like flowers dying in the sun? Are we now reaping the retribution for our sinful deeds?

At the edge of their lost souls
All mankind can do is sing a transient requiem.

Is this our requiem, our final song? Was our fate sealed the moment we unleashed our mechanized hellhound's vicious bloodlust? Safe inside our Gundanium shell we became judge and executioner and no power could stand against us.

So that love will never change again
I'll embrace you without a word.

Heero hangs limply in his harness. His head is bowed, his body contoured like a puppet tangled in its strings. Blood runs down one arm gathering on his fingertips, dripping droplet by droplet, pooling on the floor. The same scarlet stains Heero's cheeks lending the only color to his ashen face.

Squatting on trembling legs Duo discovers that the harness strap is twisted under Heero's chin possibility crushing his windpipe. Even though the rearranging could cause further injury he needs to straighten his Gundam partner. Bracing Heero with an arm across his chest Duo extracts a knife from his boot and cuts through the binding harness.

Heero's unfettered body slumps, a ragged breath escapes over his heat-chapped lips. Eyelids part sluggishly but his listless eyes refuse to focus. Carefully Duo turns his lover around easing him to the floor until Heero's head lops into Duo's lap.

"Heero can you hear me?" he whispers close to Heero's ear. A low moan is not much encouragement but it is all Heero can offer.

To that far, faraway mirage of Heaven
We struggle against the final wind.
Don't cry.

Bitter wind swirls inside the smoky cockpit. Bits of debris play tag bombarding the lovers in an attack as merciless as any strike that Shinigami and his Perfect Soldier could ever mount. As catching sobs accent his heartbroken plea Duo begs, "Heero please don't leave me."

*********

Duo holds his sleeping lover's hand wondering if Heero can sense his touch through the medicated haze. Sadly he knows from firsthand experience that it is easier to repair a mecha than its pilot. With each injury Heero's battered body takes longer to heal. There is more residual pain, less resiliency.

But Heero will heal. He will again grow impatience and curse his weakness. As Heero's pride is stripped away to bare another layer of his humanity Duo will lay beside his lover and keep the night terrors at bay. He will love Heero, protect him and cherish their life together for no one is promised a future beyond the next moment.

At most that handful of love
I'll hide in my heart and journey with you
That far, faraway alluring Heaven
Don't cry.

Battle calls like a seductive Siren. Its ruinous song lulls the senses and causes the soldier to believe that he is invincible. War lures the warrior until the last essence of his sanity is dash against the rocks and his soul is lost forever.
