Kyuuketsuki Duo: The, Uh, Not So Wonder Years Part 2
Insidiae -- Afterlude

"Duo? It's probably time for you to wake up now." Actually, he knew that Duo had been awake for quite some time now. However, since then, the braided one had not made a move to relinquish Heero, retaining the position in which he had fallen asleep, ear to Heero's heart, arms locked loosely, now, but securely, around Heero's waist. Heero himself had not fallen asleep, as usual, but instead spent the night peacefully resting while watching over the ward who slumbered under his protection.

"No," Duo mumbled, his eyes still closed. "Don't wanna wake up."

"You already are awake, Duo," he pointed out logically. He supposed there wasn't anything pressing for them to do at the moment, but that was still no reason to encourage sloth. It was already later than he would have preferred, but he had needed the long rest after the extended period of exertion. And if he hadn't stirred any earlier, then it followed that Duo would not have either.

"No," Duo repeated more clearly, although his voice was still subdued. He tightened his grip on Heero. "If I wake up, you might not be here anymore."

His expression softened. Not an entirely unreasonable conclusion, considering the ordeal his companion had just escaped from. "I promised you, Duo," he chided softly into the guardian's thick hair. "Remember? I promised you I'd be here when you woke up. I keep my promises."

Duo still refused to open his eyes, not willing to face an unwelcome sight if it was all just a lie. Instead, he sent his fingers out on reconnaissance, repeating his actions of the previous night. They moved lightly over Heero's body, tracing the smooth muscles from his side to his abdomen, across his chest and up the slender neck he had first made acquaintance with so many nights ago. His fingers slid over Heero's amused half-smirk and up the strong bones in his face, to finally tangle themselves in the dark, tousled hair. Then, and only then, after his fingers reported to him that all was present and accounted for, did he crack one violet eye open and look up, to see Heero gazing tolerantly down at him with his own deep blue eyes.

"Satisfied?" he inquired.

Duo opened his other eye and stuck out his tongue. "Yes, thank you. Quite," he answered primly. His hand slid lazily back over the smooth expanse of skin and came to rest on his companion's stomach, moving up and down slightly in time with the warrior's steady breathing. His eyes tracked its progress.

"You're pale," he observed. And indeed, he was. The skin was light, but not unhealthily so. Instead, it whispered of the potential for a warm golden bronze.

"It's not like I've spent much time sunbathing, Duo," he responded dryly.

"Hmm. We'll have to do something about that."

Heero could only raise his eyebrow in mild consternation.

OWARI

okay, so i obviously made up the word afterlude. sort of like an epilogue and an interlude, just a brief thought about what happened the next morning that was tripping around my brain.
