Daystar's Prophecy Part 1

The air was warm and muggy as the boy climbed the last few yard up the ragged mountainside to the cave entrance. By the looks of the clouds overhead, there would be a storm before the day was over. But the boy could care less about the approaching storm. It had taken him nearly two years of constant searching to find the item, which lay inside the cave and now that he was so close, he could think of nothing else.

Slowly he approached the cave mouth and peered inside. It was dark, but not so that he couldn't see the layout of the cave floor. The inside of the cave was rather large with a high, vaulted ceiling. At first glance, the cave appeared to be empty, but upon further examination a small nitch could be seen in the back wall some twenty feet from the entrance. Ever cautious of hidden traps, the boy stood in the entrance and looked the cave over thoroughly. Finally, after deciding that the area was safe, he ventured inside to get a better look at the nitch in the back wall.

The nitch was not much in itself. The staff that rested there however was another story. The staff was made from what looked like red hardwood with intricately detailed carvings which were etched in gold. The carvings were of the ancient dragon and mighty phoenix and depicted the battle fought between the two several millennia ago. The staff measured approximately six feet in length and one and one half inches in diameter. At one end was a curved, golden blade that extended another foot and at the other end was a wicked looking gold spike.

The boy walked slowly across the cave toward the staff, all the while stealing himself for the transformation which would soon be taking place. Finally, he stood before the staff. Slowly he raised both hands until they were directly above the staff. He closed his eyes and began to chant. A soft, blue glow began to emanate from the palms of his hands and slowly transferred itself to the staff. Just as slowly, the light began to brighten until it was almost a pure white then in a flash the light, along with the staff, became a glowing ball hovering just in front of the boy's body. Raising his hands, he grasped the sphere of light and guided it toward his chest where it entered his body and disappeared.

"It's done." he whispered, swaying slightly as the ball of energy was integrated into his system.

Suddenly, sensing another presence in the cave with him, he spun around to find a tall man standing just inside the entrance to the cave. The man was backlit by the light outside but, even though he couldn't see the man's face, he knew exactly who it was.

"Gaison!" he snarled, stepping back only to collide with the nitch in the wall.

"My precious, it's been to long."

"Not long enough as far as I'm concerned. What the hell to you want?"

"Why, you wound me. You know I only have your best interest in mind."

"Yeah, right. I told you last time I didn't want anything to do with you and I haven't changed my mind."

"Well, that's just too bad since you really don't have a choice anymore."

The boy narrowed his eyes but said no more. He knew that transforming the staff had drained most of his energy and therefore he was no match for Gaison. But he also knew that he would much rather die than end up a slave to the dark mage.

"What, no more witty comments? You know you don't have the energy to fight me. That's the reason I put a watcher spell on this cave. I knew you would eventually show up to claim the staff and once you had, you would be completely helpless. So now my precious..."

"Stop calling me that." the boy snarled. "I'm not now nor will I ever be your anything so get used to it."

"Very well," Gaison said, raising his right hand directly in front of him, "if you will not come of your own free will, then I'll just have to persuade you."

A green light flashed from Gaison's outstretched palm and raced forward. The boy quickly raised his left hand and suddenly there was a wall of flames separating him from Gaison and stopping the man's attack.

"Very good precious. But how long can you keep it up? I'm willing to bet just raising the shield took whatever was left of your reserves. Am I right?"

The boy refused to answer, but inside he was desperately trying to find a solution. Gaison was right of course, the fire shield had almost completely drained him. And since it was a short lived spell at best, he would soon be completely at Gaison's mercy. As the boy was busy trying to find a solution, the man was slowly edging his way around the inside wall of the cave toward the boy.

Just as the shield was about to collapse, a blinding light filled the cave followed by four distinct thumps. When the light finally dissipated, four figures could be seen lying on the floor of the cave. Both the boy and Gaison were so surprised by their appearance neither noticed the shield disappearing.

"What the..." the boy gasped. Then one of the figures sat up and he could see that it was a boy with messy, brown hair and deep blue eyes. Slowly, as if in a dream, the other figures also began to rise. The first had black hair pulled back into a tight pony tail at the nape of his neck and had dark eyes. The second had light blonde hair and sea blue eyes and the final boy had brown hair with bangs that fell over one side of his face so that only one bright green eye could be seen. All four sets of eyes were trained on him and Gaison.

Swearing to himself, the boy spun around toward Gaison and raised his right hand. A blue light appeared, creating a wall of ice around the dark mage who was still staring at the newcomers and didn't have time to block.

"Get out of here." he yelled over his shoulder. "I can only hold him for a short time."

The four looked at each other for a moment then, as if deciding it would be best to listen to him, they stood and left the cave as quickly as they could.

"You won't get far, precious. You don't have the strength. And when I find you, you'll finally belong to me and me alone."

"Dream on. I'll never belong to you or anyone else for that matter."

"We'll see precious, we'll see."

With that, the boy turned and darted from the cave. He knew the ice shield would only hold for a few more minutes and he had to be as far away as possible by then. But as soon as he emerged from the cave, he saw the four boys. They had not gotten very far from the cave mouth and were staring out at the forest that butted against the mountainside. Moving as quickly as he dared on the steep slope, he made his way over to them.

"We have to go. Now." he told them and started passed.

"Wait a second," the boy with the blonde hair said, grabbing his arm.

"We don't have a second. The ice shield will not hold much longer. And I don't plan on being here when it falls."

"Who was that man and why were you two fighting?" this time the boy with black hair asked, stepping in front of him effectively blocking his escape.

"We don't have time for this. Listen, just follow me, ok? Once we get into the forest we should be relatively safe then I'll answer all of your questions."

The boys once again looked at each other and it seemed as though they would continue to argue.

"Please," he begged, "just trust me on this. Please."

Finally, the boy with the blonde hair nodded his head which appeared to be a sign to the others and they began to climb the rest of the way down the mountainside.
