Breathe in Fire

Duo Maxwell sat on the sand, looking out over the water as he watched the sun slowly sink below the horizon. He had always loved this time of the day; the quiet and peacefulness of it as well as the beauty. And he would take any chance he could get to come down to the beach just to sit and watch.

This day was a bit different though. This visit to his favorite place was something more. Opening up his right hand, which had been clenched tight for so long it was painful to stretch out the fingers, he glanced away from nature's beauty toward the object that lay harmlessly in his palm. Almost as if drawn to it, the light from the sun glinted off the smooth gold finish, following its curve and enhancing its plain beauty.

Swallowing sharply, Duo immediately clenched his hand closed once again and turned his attention back across the water. Already the sun was over halfway gone, melting into the ocean and spreading out across the water in molten orange, red, and yellow. In a little less than an hour, it would be completely gone, until the next evening when the cycle would begin yet again. But things would be different tomorrow because Duo would be different tomorrow. The cold metal, lying heavy in his hand, would make sure of that.

The big question though, was whether it would be for the good or the bad. How he had never seen this coming, he would never know. But now that it had, he just did not know what to do. So instead of doing anything, he sat and watched the sun set, holding his future tightly in his hand.

Just as the sun was dipping completely below the horizon, he felt more than heard the other man's arrival. Without saying anything, Heero Yuy sat down beside him, drawing his long legs up to his chest and crossing his arms over his knees as he too gazed out across the now dark water. For several long moments, the only sound between them was the rush of the waves crashing on the beach. They were only sitting a few feet from the high tide line and as the moon climbed higher in the sky so did the water level.

"I'm sorry I ran out like that." Duo finally whispered, breaking the stillness between them.

"It's alright." Heero offered, keeping his voice low as well so as not to disturb the mood between them. "I shouldn't have done it that way."

"No, Heero, what you did was perfect. I just..."

"You just what, Duo?"

"I don't know." the longhaired man breathed before giving into his body's needs and leaning over until he was pressed shoulder to shoulder with the other man. Heero, recognizing the request for what it was, shifted so he could wrap his arm around Duo's shoulder, using it to pull him closer as he brushed a kiss against the man's temple. Inside, he could feel his heart, which he was sure had stopped the moment the violet-eyed man ran from the house, start up once again and he closed his eyes on the tears that threatened.

"What don't you know?" he asked softly.

"I don't know if I'm ready for this." Duo answered, pulling his gaze from the place where the sun had disappeared to look once again at his closed hand. He lifted it and this time when he opened it, he used the fingers of his other hand to pluck the object from his palm, turning it over and over before his eyes. "I don't know if we're ready for this."

"I don't know either, Duo." Heero admitted before reaching out to gently clash Duo's trembling fingers, stopping the object's movement. "But I do know that we'll never find out if we don't try."

"But what if--" Duo began only to be cut off by one of Heero's fingers as the man turned him so they were facing each other.

"No what if's, no might be's." the blue-eyed man said with a shake of his head. "We've been together for two years now, Duo. And we've been living together for the last ten months. We've already been through just about everything a couple can go through. This is just the next step in our journey. And it's a journey I don't plan on taking with anyone else."

"Love me like you loved the sun." the braided man breathed. "That's what you said."

"You're always down here to watch the sunset." Heero explained as he ran the back of his fingers down Duo's soft cheek. "Some times, I watch from the balcony as you sit here and I want nothing more than to be here with you, holding you, and watching it with you. But I've never wanted to intrude on your time and you've never asked me to come. And while I know it's selfish, I just wanted you to love me as much as you love this."

"Oh, Heero." Duo breathed before wrapping both arms around the other man and burying his face in Heero's neck. "I never meant to leave you out of anything in my life. I just never thought you would want to come down here with me. If I'd known, I would've asked."

Wrapping his own arms around Duo's body, Heero pulled the violet-eyed man closer until he was almost sitting in his lap.

"And there's nothing in my life, not even this, that I love more than you." Duo continued as the burrowed closer to Heero's heat. "Nothing that means more to me than you."

"Then why are you so afraid?"

With a gusty sigh, Duo relaxed further into Heero's arms before lifting his hand that was once again clutching the small object tightly. Opening his hand, he allowed the wane light from the moon and stars to caress its smooth surface. Such a small little thing and yet, it meant so much for both of them that it might as well have been a hundred times its size.

"I really wish I knew, 'Ro." he finally answered. "I really wish I knew."

Carefully plucking the object from Duo hand, Heero held it up to the sky, giving it a perusal of his own. It had grown warm, having been held closely in the longhaired man's palm but it still gleamed with the light and seemed to shimmer before his eyes. Then, reaching around with his other arm, he grasped Duo's left hand and slipped the object over the third finger, happy that it fit perfectly. He allowed himself a moment more to admire how the gold band played beautifully against Duo's pale skin, just as the colors of the sun played against the ocean surface each and every night before folding the hand in his own and pulling it to his chest.

"Maybe we can find out together." he whispered and when Duo lifted his head to look at him, those much loved violet eyes shimmered just as the ring had done.

"I think I'd like that." the man answered, clutching his hand tightly against Heero chest and feeling the man's heart beat, strong and steady. "I think I'd like that very much."
