Life With Heero Arc Part 106
Preparation Part 7

Blinking sleepily, Duo smiled affectionately, his face barely visible in the dim light of early morning. "Hey."

"Hey," Heero murmured hesitantly in response to the soft greeting. He wasn't quite sure how to act after the release of emotional control that had accompanied last night's physical release. He still felt raw. Exposed. Vulnerable.

Suddenly, Duo's actions last weekend made one whole hell of a lot more sense, and Heero felt a pang of regret for not having handled things better at the time. If Duo had felt even a fraction as emotionally confused and hypersensitive then as he had last night, then Duo's - well, "clinginess" was too strong, but he couldn't think of a more appropriate term - in the immediate aftermath was completely understandable; he'd done exactly the same thing, after all.

It was no wonder that, the next morning, Duo had wanted to fall back into the familiar territory of best friends hanging out together while he had a chance to think things through and adjust. Now, Heero needed the same time to process, and he just hoped that he could find his own mental and emotional balance as quickly as Duo had.

And that Duo would remember his own experience well enough to give him the chance without making him ask for it. Heero really didn't think he was ready to talk about last night just yet.

He wasn't too sure that he would ever want to talk about it. It had been incredible and terrifying; it had lasted forever and been over too damn fast. If Duo had hesitated for even a heartbeat, or if he'd allowed himself a single moment to think instead of just feel, it wouldn't have happened at all. That it had happened was a huge relief, but he couldn't help but worry about not only the less-than-perfect aspects, like his little emotional meltdown afterwards, but also about if and when he'd manage to make it happen again.

Duo's voice and a gentle poke in the ribs broke into Heero's train of thought.

"Hmm?"

"Your shoulder?" Duo repeated patiently. "How is it this morning?"

Heero rolled it cautiously, then raised and lowered his arm slowly, testing its response. Muscles and tendons twinged and ached a bit, and his range of motion was still slightly restricted. "Better, but not a hundred percent," he admitted a bit absently, his mind already drifting back to the question of exactly why last night had worked, and how he could repeat it.

After all the time that he'd spent making careful plans for later, after the inventory was over, last night's success had in fact been the result of an impulsive, spur of the moment decision. They'd both been aroused, they'd been in the privacy of their bedroom, they'd been very relaxed and comfortable with each other... The massage had definitely played an important role, but being tired had also made it easier for him to shut his brain off and just feel and let himself go with the flow. Maybe...

A slightly less gentle poke in the ribs interrupted Heero's thoughts again.

"Dammit, Heero, stop thinking so hard," Duo scolded, his tone one of exasperated affection. "Don't try to analyze last night, you'll just tie yourself up in knots. Just accept it as the great time it was, okay?"

Caught, Heero couldn't help but chuckle ruefully. Duo knew him all too well. "I'll try."

"Good." Duo rewarded him by brushing a soft, reassuring kiss over his lips before rolling out of bed. "Listen, why don't you go grab another hot shower, see if you can loosen that shoulder up a little more while I see if I can scrounge something up for breakfast?"

"Okay," Heero agreed. He vaguely remembered Duo wiping them both down before getting them under the covers last night, but, sore shoulder aside, a shower was probably still a good idea.

Rolling out of bed himself as Duo dragged on a pair of boxers, Heero asked with studied nonchalance, "So, last night was great, was it?" Sure, they'd both gotten off, but the aftermath had been a little... rocky. 'Not to mention damn embarrassing,' he thought, wincing mentally. 'Duo didn't make a big deal out of it, but I kind of... fell apart... on him...' Somehow, he didn't think that was a recommended way to wrap up a passionate interlude.

Duo laughed, picked a crumpled towel up off the floor, wadded it up, and threw it at Heero. "Now, you're just fishing for compliments." On his way out of the door, Duo flashed a quick grin over his shoulder. "But yeah, Heero. It was."

An involuntary grin on his own face, Heero hugged the musky-scented towel against him as he headed off to shower. Last night hadn't been perfect, but maybe it had been good enough.

Good enough for a start.
