Kaizoku no Shou Prologue

Duo Maxwell stealthily slipped into the hold of the Moonshadow, a ship set for Ireland. He knew the captain's preferred treatment of stowaways, but considering the state of his funds... specifically his lack of them, this was necessary. He found a dark niche and carefully hid behind large sacks of something- he didn't even want to think about it was. Pulling a dusty old rag over the hole he'd passed through he sat back and stared off into the darkness.

The life of an orphan had been hard, but it hadn't kept him down. He reached into his small bag that contained all his worldly possessions, five books, a brush, and an old letter from his aunt, postmarked from Cork, Ireland. It was his only link to the woman. This was his only chance to find the family he'd always wanted.

And at the very bottom of his bag, safely wrapped up in a rag, a beautiful rosary. Amethyst stones served as prayer beads on the ancient silver chain. It was his most prized possession aside from his books... it was the only thing he had that was once his mother's. Surely it would have been worth enough to buy him a first class ticket to Ireland, but even in the hardest of times he wouldn't even consider selling it.

Plenty of people had tried to take it. Duo smiled grimly and idly ran his fingers over his right boot. Inside that boot hid a lightweight dagger that had saved his life and possessions countless times. Duo had always been small for his age, even now in his seventeenth year. His long chestnut hair and large violet eyes seemed to give thugs the impression he would be an easy target. When one lives on the street one quickly learns to become deadly... or they become dead. And the he had no plans on becoming dead.

Duo's stomach rumbled quietly. He hadn't eaten in a few days, but that was nothing new. Now that he was finally on board and relatively safe he dug around in his pockets for the loaf of bread he'd lifted off a passing lady. Her bag had been so heavily loaded with food she never even noticed the theft.

The gently rocking of the ship slowly caught up with the teen as he finished his meal. The comfortable feeling of food in his stomach combined with the swaying motion soon lulled Duo into slumber.

It had been a few weeks and all was going well... or so Duo had thought. Suddenly strong hands seized his shoulders and pulled him from his hiding place. "What in the hell-"

Duo cut himself off as he stared into the face of an obviously irate older man. This was not good.

The grizzled old man hauled Duo around by his shirt. "CAP'IN! We got us a stowaway!"

Duo's jaw dropped. How had they discovered him?! His hiding place had been perfect!

A quick jab to Duo's solar plexus cut off anything else he was going to say. As some other crusty men helped the first tie him up to one of the masts another guy drug his bag up onto the deck. They began pulling random things out and examining them carefully as if trying to decide monetary value.

"Get out of there! That's my stuff, keep your filthy hands off it!" Not in the best of moods to begin with, Duo was seriously pissed off. He was thoroughly disgusted in being discovered. It was better to be angry than frightened... maybe then they'd kill him quickly. He tugged at the ropes that bound him to the mast. If only he could reach his boot to get the dagger!

"On the contrary, its our 'stuff' now. You stowed aboard the wrong ship." Duo turned to the new comer. He seemed to carry some amount of authority among the men, and Duo knew that this old man was the notorious Captain G. "Anything of value in your belongings is now our property. Once that is done we will throw you overboard." He turned to observe his men in the process of pulling item after item out from Duo's bag.

"There isn't much here Cap'in, just some stupid books and some odd looking clothes." They carelessly tossed Duo's only possessions back into the bag and awaited orders.

"Too bad boy." G drew his sword from its sheath.

"Wait a minnut!" The same sailor tugged on the rag that covered Duo's rosary. The old cloth fell away from it and the amethyst stones glittered in the sunlight.

G let out a low whistle. "Well look at that... That's a mighty pretty bit of jewelry."

~No no no no no no!!!!!~ Duo struggled even more fiercely against his bonds. They had their dirty disgusting hands all over his mother's rosary!! "Don't you fucking touch that!!"

G snatched the rosary out of the hands of his sailor. "What, this? Why not?" He hauled back and punched Duo, drawing blood from the teen's lip. He was strong for an old man.

Duo slumped slightly dreading what he would have to do. Before he could doubt himself Duo dislocated his left wrist and covertly slipped it out of its bonds. The pain was excruciating and tears leaked from his eyes, but he refused to cry out.

"Awwww... he's crying!" G and his men laughed merrily. He walked over and punched Duo again, this time in the stomach, allowing Duo the excuse to slump down to his knees.

Duo quickly reached into his boot and drew out the knife. While the crew and G were still laughing he slipped behind the captain and held the knife to the old man's throat... effectively cutting off all laughter.

"What do you think you're doing boy?" If there hadn't been a small tremor of fear in G's voice Duo might have backed down some... but there was. "Give me the Rosary."

One of the sailors made a move to disarm Duo, but he only pressed the point deeper into G's neck, drawing blood this time. "Give.Me.The.Rosary."

"Hey Captain! You might wanna see this!"

The young Japanese man walked over and took the spy-glass away from his subordinate. "What is it Muller?"

"Look on the deck of the Moonshadow! Some kid beat us there!"

"What?" Heero looked onto the deck of their target, and sure enough, there was a boy... about his age actually, holding a knife to the throat of G! He handed the glass back to Muller and walked over to his first mate.

"Trowa, there seems to be a small complication."

Trowa raised his one visible eyebrow in confusion.

Heero smirked. "G seems to be having trouble ALREADY! A mutiny... as best I can tell. Some boy is holding a knife to his throat."

Trowa's eyes sparkled with repressed laughter. "Far be it from us to pass up such an opportunity."

The captain nodded. "Yes, its not often we get the opportunity to strike at the flag sip of Sanc! Ready the men... we're going aboard!

The pirate ship Lazarus silently drew closer to the Moonshadow. Thankful for the distraction they were within ten feet of the ship before the men on board raised an alarm.

By that time it was too late.

Duo was getting very nervous. He finally had his bag and all of its contents back in his possession... but now what?

He knew that the moment the sailors saw an opening they would take it. And his death would not be a pleasant one. The only thing he could think of was to take one of the lifeboats. They would already be stocked with some food and water... maybe enough to get back to America.

He was slowly inching his way over to the closest when it happened.

"PIRATES OFF THE PORT BOW!"

Duo's head shot up and only confirmed it. They were under attack.

He threw G away from him and sprinted to the lifeboat just as the pirates were boarding. If he had any luck left he would be off the ship before they noticed he was there in the first place.

Heero was one of the first to step on board of the Moonshadow. His disgust for Sanc only increased as he saw how the untrained louts ran from him and his fellow pirates. Across the deck he saw where G was being held hostage by a boy with incredibly long hair. That's all he could tell because the boy's back was to him.

Suddenly the boy threw G away and made a break for one of the lifeboats. ~I don't think so.~

Heero strode across the deck and over to where the boy was frantically trying to cut with a small dagger the rope binding the boat to the side of the ship.

Quickly before the boy could sense him, Heero reached down and grabbed the wrist of the hand holding the dagger. He coldly looked down and stared into fearful violet eyes.

Duo anxiously cut at the last rope that bound the boat to the Moonshadow. He was so close! Just a little bit more and he'd be free.

Suddenly a hand grabbed his right wrist and Duo reluctantly looked up into the face of his captor. Cold cobalt blue. He felt his freedom slip away... unless...

Duo quickly switched the dagger to his left hand even though his wrist still hurt from being dislocated.

Before the man could do anything Duo plunged the dagger into his shoulder. Instead of releasing him, the man hauled him out of the boat... by one arm.

The combined screams of both injured parties drew the attention of everyone on the ship- pirate or not. Duo dangled by one arm that had been nearly pulled out of it's socket, and his captor bled from where the dagger was still embedded in his left shoulder.

All of a sudden Duo found himself flung down to the deck. He wrapped his right arm around his body and cradled his left wrist as he felt his vision swim. Too much pain...

He was starting to sway when he saw boots stop before him. Duo slowly looked up and saw a vision of loveliness. Blonde hair and pure blue eyes stared down at him.

Duo gaped knowing that he must appear foolish, but this was the first one he'd seen... "Are you an angel?" Duo managed to smile at the thought that God had finally sent one of his messengers to bring him to his mother. Before the angel could answer Duo fell into unconsciousness, but that didn't take the smile from his face.
