Reaching Each Other

Damn these old wheels

Duo Maxwell stood at the side of the road leaning against a beat-up old red car while a man behind him filled it with petal. He rolled the gum around in his mouth, annoyed that he had sworn to Quatre he would give up smoking and wasn't planning anytime soon on breaking that promise, even though he was dying for a fag.

"That'll be ten bucks mate."

Duo turned to the man and smiled and reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumbled 10.

"Thanks."

"Drive safe. It'll be night soon." The man warned as he walked away and Duo climbed into the car, a letter clenched tight in his hand that had gone back to rest in his pocket after he had given the man his money. For a few minutes he sat there, clenching and unclenching his hand before he finally pulled it away and started his car up and rolled back out on to the long desert road somewhere in the middle of the USA.

Rolling too slow

The journey from the L2 colony down to America and then across way too many states that Duo could recall towards the old gundam safehouse located deep in the middle of the mountain range up in Canada.

I stare down this white line

He still had miles to go, but he continued to drive. Determined to reach the safehouse as soon as he could.

With so far to go

The war had ended ten years ago. It had been ten long years and Duo had only seen Heero once in all that time.

Heero Yuy.

The person that was waiting for Duo at the end of this journey. The person that had sent the forbidden letter to his lover and the need to just hold Heero once again drove Duo on.

Headlights keep coming

There weren't many cars on the highway, but those that went whizzing past made Duo sigh in boredom and the silence pressed in against Duo as he did nothing but drive, seeming not to get any nearer to where he wanted to be.

Loneliness humming along

And after eight hours of driving straight Duo was forced to pull over and he lent back against the seat and tried to get some hours sleep.

Who poured this rain

When he woke there was rain lashing at his windows and heavy storm clouds hung over head. Duo reached across to the passenger seat and pulled out a sandwich he had brought from the last petal stop. As he eat it, his other hand fished out his coffee flask, and he forced himself to swallow the now cold drink but it still gave him a slight caffeine buzz.

Who made these clouds

His bright violet eyes was unable to stop watching the storm that revealed itself to him as he sat there, eating a pitiful breakfast. His mind wondered back to when he had last seen his love. The night before Heero had married Relena, the stupid bitch. Relena had somehow managed to convince most of the world that being gay meant you were dangerous and would start a war and so 'being gay' had been made illegal.

As a result of her so called law, she had broken up Duo and Heero's relationship. She would of have Duo killed if Heero hadn't agreed to marry her. Trowa had died when the "police" had gone to split him and Quatre up. The news had tore out Quatre's heart. But now Quatre had settled down with a young girl called Hannah.

I stare through this windshield

Hannah was not into guys and Quatre wasn't into girls. It was a relationship based on pure friendship and they were happy. Last thing that Duo had heard of Wufei was he had married and had a son called 'Max', Duo still didn't know why.

Duo's eyes stared into the storm that was blocking out the morning sunrise.

Thinking out loud

His fingers touched the letter in his pocket and he pulled it out and in the safety of the car away from unwanted eyes, he slowly read it once again.

Time keeps on crawling

Time stood still until he finished it and he raised his head, a soft sad smile playing on his lips. He wished that time would stop and let him move. He didn't have much time and he needed to get to Heero quickly. Heero wanted him and he desperately needed to see him.

Love keeps on calling me home

Duo started the car once again and put his foot down on the pedal and he drove away fast down the road. His heart hearing the cry of his lover and wanting to hear it again and again.

I'd jump all these mountains

Heero Yuy was sitting on the chair outside the small cabin that had once been a safehouse during the war. It had not been used in nearly ten years but still in the three months he had been living there, he had turned it into a respectable hut. The surrounding countryside was mountains, forests and snow but it was so peaceful and quiet.

Too quiet, even for Heero Yuy. Yet he waited with patience, he knew that Duo had gotten his letter and he knew he would come. He just had to wait, but damn it, all he wanted to do was leave the safety of his small house and find his lover.

And take to the skies

Heero sat in that seat watching the mountains and the sky all day, like he had done since he had received the letter saying his letter had been received. He sat there even after the night had fallen.

Sail through the heavens

The stars shone brightly down on him and there were no streetlamps to ruin them, only the soft glow of the candle that rested by Heero's foot. He preferred the darkness to the lightness. Darkness made him feel safe, it made him remember the hidden affair that him and Duo had had just before his marriage. One that was hidden away by the blanket of the night and space.

With stars in my eyes

Heero didn't realise it, but he soon fell asleep beneath the stars and slept soundly even when the owls hooted into the night.

Duo crawled into the small motel room that he had found on his route. He snuggled under the blankets and stared out of the window at the stars. He smiled and reached a hand across the blanket and in his dream, he held Heero tightly.

If my heart had wings
I would fly to you
And lie beside you as you dream
If my heart had wings

Heero regretted sleeping in the chair come the morning when he woke to feel the unwelcome feeling of cramp. He rose from his seat to find food, drink and to bathe.

We both committed

Fresh warm water ran down Heero's body as he stood in the shower. He knew he shouldn't have asked Duo to come. They had made an agreement when he had married Relena that they would not make contact with each other and stay as far away as possible.

We both agreed

It would save them both so much pain but still, Heero had found himself yearning to hold Duo, and simple touch his hand. And with him and Relena now getting a divorce, all he wanted was Duo back in his life.

But he still couldn't forget the small fact that Relena had placed both him and Duo on the "kill on sight" list.

You do what you have to

But not even that would be able to stop two very determined gundam pilots from reaching each other… even if they hadn't been said gundam pilots in ten years.

To get what you need

Duo finally stopped again at the base of the mountains range that rested on the borders. He stepped from his car and rested an arm on the top as his eyes scanned the mountain range. He knew where the house was, he could get there by gundam, but he didn't know the way by road. He thought about risking to buy a map, but he didn't want to go to any shops since he knew he was now being searched for by a fanatic 'girlfriend' who wanted her 'boyfriend' back so they could finally get married. Hilde just wouldn't get the hint and didn't understand the word 'no'. For some reason, girls like Hilde and Relena never do.

Feeling you near me

But Duo was happy. He was so close to Heero, even though half a mountain range stood between them. He was on the final stretch and it would soon be over and he would be with Heero again.

With so many miles in between

But happiness doesn't come easy.

Half way up the road, Duo ran out of gas and sun had already fallen.

Oh, Lord it ain't easy

Heero nested, snug as a bug, by the fire in the living room. His deep prussian eyes watching the flames dance in an erotic pattern. He could hear the wolves howling outside and the owls were still hooting. He found comfort in them, he wasn't alone as long as he could hear them.

Out here in the dark

"You owe me big time for this Yuy." Duo snarled as he curled up under his coat in the back of the car, shivering in the chilly air. He had pulled jumpers from the small suitcase he had packed but no matter how much he wrapped himself up he couldn't get warm.

To keep us together so far apart

Heero put the fire out before making his way to bed, his eyes fluttered closed and he fell asleep with the hope of seeing Duo again soon.

Duo finally fell asleep himself in the early hours of the morning, his body demanding it, but his hopes were still high as he knew sometime tomorrow he would see Heero.

If my heart had wings
I would fly to you
And lie beside you as you dream
If my heart had wings

Much as he hated to do it when Heero woke he discovered the need to go grocery shopping. He was lucky that the small village near to the house all hated the laws that Relena had set and Heero had been welcomed into their families like an old friend. He didn't fear going to see them but he didn't want to leave the house in case Duo turned up after he had gone. But the hungry drove Heero out of the house and he was soon on his way down the mountain.

Stuck on this circle

The sound of a car going past woke Duo and he raised his head in a vain hope to catch their eye but the driver appeared to be in a hurry and missed seeing the chestnut head. With a sigh Duo climbed from the car and grabbed his suitcase and belongings and he began to climb up the mountainside.

Spinnin' around

"Relena Peacecraft is going mad y'know."

Heero looked up at the old lady that was picking out soups. He recalled her name quickly.

"Why is that Mrs. Waterfield?"

She gave a light chuckle.

"You, Heero. She's trying to find you. Been searching all of L2 I hear, and L4. Seems to think you have a lover up there."

Heero smiled. "It's nothing like that. I come from the colonies."

"You are safe here. No more Mrs Peacecraft hunting you down."

Heero smiled again as he paid for his items.

"I hope not."

Cut loose from this road

The red car that Heero had passed on the way down was still there on the way back. He pulled to a stop to investigate it but there was no sign of life. He simply shrugged and began to drive upwards home again.

His breath caught in his throat as some more miles down the lane he saw the owner of the car and a very familiar (now four foot long) chestnut brown braid.

That's tying me down

Duo heard the car that was driving up the road and he moved in to the side in avoid it, but was unsuccessful as it pulled to a stop just a few meters in front of him. A hand waved out of the window and Duo walked over, his brain working ten hundred miles a second to think up a decent cover story for why he was walking up a mountain at ten in the morning, with a suitcase trailing behind.

"Yes?"

If my heart had wings

Heero chuckled at the tone of voice.

"Did you walk from L2 just to see me?" He replied and no money could have brought the priceless look on Duo's face as he realised who was sitting in front of him.

I would fly to you

"You asked me to come." Duo shrugged. "Walking was my only means so I had to walk. It wasn't like I could fly any more. I don't have wings."

Heero smiled.

"Get in."

Heero made a boiling hot mug of coffee as soon as they got in, they sat down on the sofa together with a fire roaring in the background.

"Where's Relena?" Duo asked softly.

Heero shrugged. "L4, I think. She's looking for me, and I think she is looking for you now. But we are safe up here."

"It's been so long." Duo sighed.

Heero reached out a hand and took Duo's. His thumb lightly rubbed the back of the hand.

"But worth it? To spend a lifetime here, living with me?"

Duo chuckled. "I couldn't resist that offer now could I?"

Heero's hand moved and he cupped the side of Duo's face and lent in slowly for a sweet kiss.

And lie beside you as you dream

Duo woke the next morning, his face pillowed against Heero's chest. His legs were thrown over Heero's and his arm stuck underneath Heero's back, while the other hand curled around Heero's waist hugging Heero tightly to him. Duo smiled and snuggled back to sleep.

"Duo?" a soft sleepy voice asked.

Duo grunted softly back.

"I love you."

Duo looked up at the prussian eyed man that was his life.

"I love you too."
