Shinigami's Secret Part 7

Heero followed Une up to her private quarters. Not many people were invited up there, but she knew they would have privacy there. Once again she asked him, "Did your mother ever tell you why she was leaving without you Heero?"

"She said it was time for me to grow up."

Une looked at the cut crystal decanters on the shelves and sighed as she poured herself a glass.

"Your mother was a very proud woman. She never accepted charity from anyone. She was very proud of you Heero. I remember the first time she realized you had taught yourself to read. She came here and bragged to everyone who would listen about how smart her Heero was. You know, she never had any education and her mother never had the time to teach her anything. Your mother knew some math by necessity but that was it. She was convinced that 'Her Heero' was perfect."

Long elegant fingers played with the stem of the glass before she seemed to stare off into the past.

"I think back then, we were all a little in love with your mom. She had this drive that just seemed to pull you in. But the only one she ever had eyes for was you Heero. It was funny in a way she treated you so hard because in a way she knew she wouldn't always be there. And she knew all too well how deadly kindness could be on the streets. She was determined to give you more then she had. Did you ever wonder why she used to lock you in the closets and hide you away? You were a very pretty baby, too pretty in fact. She wouldn't have been able to protect you from the men in her life. If she had wanted to, she could have whored you and made a lot more money then she did alone. But I think she tried in her own way to shelter you, because you were all her hopes and dreams. The tiny part of herself that was still innocent of the dark side of human nature."

Heero snorted wanting to believe but not daring to allow himself to.

"Sure that's why she sold me at that party."

"As I said, your mother was a proud woman. But she was only human, she tried to do the best for you that she knew how. She never told you, she never told anyone, in fact I only knew because I guessed. She was dieing, Heero. She knew exactly what awaited her if she stayed here and was determined not to put you through that, like her mother had done to her. Nothing else could have made her decide to let you go but that. You wouldn't believe the things she did to get the money to get you ready for that party. If you don't believe anything else I say, believe me when I say she loved you more then anything else in her life. She loved you till the day she died."

On that word Heero looked up eyes wide. Une nodded toward an urn on the counter.

"Gregory was nicer then expected. He sent her ashes back here so she could be buried in her homeland. Take my advice Heero, whatever decisions you make, don't make her mistakes. Never leave without telling someone how much you love them, and if you can't live without them, don't leave at all."

Standing Heero embraced the tired looking woman awkwardly and whispered, "Domo arigato gozaimashita."

Then turning he left the room some how knowing she needed to be alone. Once in the hallway he collapsed letting the tears wash the pain away.

From the shadows Tamika stepped out and wrapped her arms around Une.

"When are you going to tell him the truth?"

"I did tell him the truth. The woman who was his mother died the moment she let him go."

"Are you strong enough to let him go again?"

"Yes, because I know that boy can give him what I never could."

Une turned in Tamika's arms and unbeknownst to her echoed her son's sobs.

She had gone to England expecting to die and not really caring. The car accident revealed all, but instead of dumping her when he found out the sickness underlying her injuries, he stayed. By then he was too besotted to leave. In fact he spent the money and time needed to help her evade the cancer that had invaded her body and restructure her shattered face and collarbone. He delighted in teaching her the finer things in life and educating her. He even helped her search for Heero knowing she wouldn't be content until she knew her son was cared for. He had taught her the kinder side of love, even if she never loved him back, he was content. And when he died two years later, he had left her a sizeable legacy. She returned to Japan and watched Heero from afar ready to step in if he ever needed help.

From his post at the bar, Odin determined Heero seemed to be okay and headed to the phone.

"Hello I'd like to make a collect call please."

The Horses by Kenny Loggins

We will fly way on high
Where the cool winds blow
Or in the sun laughing having fun
With all the people we know
If the situation should keep us separated
I know the world won't fall apart
You will free the beautiful bird
Caught inside your heart

Can you see her oh she flies so proud
Cast her wild wings over water and cloud

That's the way it's gonna be little darling
We'll go riding on the horses
Way up in the sky little darling
If you fall I'll pick you up, pick you up

You will grow until you go
I'll be right there by your side
Even then a whispering wind
Will call me to you in the night
I hear all the people of the world
In my one bird's cry
I see them trying every way they know
To make their spirits fly

Can you see her moonlight in her eye
Coming from under my wing
You were born to fly

That's the way it's gonna be, little darling
We'll go riding on the horses
Way up in the sky little darling
If you fall I'll pick you up, pick you up

TBC...

Did I shock you?
