Promise of the Black Rose Part 1

"K'so" Heero cursed as the icy rain pelted him to the skin soaking through the thin green tee shirt he wore. The lightening flashed and the crash of the near by thunder reminded him of the need to find shelter. Storms on Gaia were unpredictable yet dangerous. Not five minutes ago there hadn't been a cloud in sight. Looking around Heero realized his ramblings had brought him to the middle of some over grown ruins that he had once played in as a child. The deeply hidden pain that the memory sparked flared in his eyes before he pushed it away like he did all his emotions since the year. Hopefully with practice and persistence one day he wouldn't feel at all. Face remaining impassive as he remembered his childhood secret he quickly realized the only shelter offered was the stained glass gazebo.

He rushed through the door and closed it quickly as he noticed the heavy drops had turned to small pellets of hail. The semi-dark of the afternoon storm had turned the room into a den of shadows the brief flashes of lightening caused the unboarded windows to send dazzling rainbows of color to dance across the dusty floor. Shaking slightly from the cold he wrapped his arms ineffectually around himself.

"Of all the places I never would have expected run into you here, you always seemed to hate the ruins. Why have you been ignoring my messages Heero?" Came the soft question from the shadows.

Heero repeated his curse silently this time. He would rather out there in the storm then in here with Duo.

"I...I've been busy." Heero muttered.

Duo shook his head stepping in to the weak light. Talking softly he whispered, "You should never lie to me Heero, you're absolutely horrible at it. I can always tell. I've known you too long. I can always see through the mask you wear for the world. When did you start wearing it for me?"

"Hn." Came the nondescript reply. Heero knew any answer would be incriminating.

"I don't think I've seen you since the wedding announcement. I thought you liked Hilde, Heero." He said and took a step closer as Heero retreated desperate to avoid getting any closer to Duo.

"I have always thought Queen Hilde would be a perfect wife for you your highness. Beautiful, rich, sophisticated, well bred with impeccable manners...." He silently added the words 'everything I'm not' in his mind. Unfortunately he had delivered his speech in that emotionless voice he only used when he was hurt.

"You make her seem like a prized horse" came Duo's joking reply.

Heero shook his head as a flash of lightening illuminated his beloved's features.

"We've been best friends forever Duo, ever since that day we met after the Great War had ended. You're closer to me then anyone I've known since my parents were killed...."

Duo narrowed his eyes as he noticed Heero was chewing the soft flesh of his full bottom lip. He only did that when he was nervous about something and Duo briefly wondered where he had gained that knowledge after all Heero Yuy was never nervous. At least not the Heero Yuy he knew.

"And?" He prompted.

"Well you're Gaian, I'm human, you're an Emperor and I'm the half-brother of a lesser diplomat, the son of the woman who led the first strike against your army in the war. All you need to do is look at us to realize how different we are. We would have never met under normal circumstances much less become friends of any sort. It's just so wrong, we're from two different worlds, we should end it before it becomes messy."

How could he explain he had always hoped Duo would one day remember, that it would killing him to pretend anymore?

"What the Hell are you talking about?" Duo growled harshly. It was understandable when you considered they had been friends, no, best friends, since the Day he first met Heero five years ago and Heero had never muttered that kind of drivel before. It had never mattered to them because they had instantly been perfect together, Heero and Duo, not the General's son and the Emperor. For obvious reasons they had never really told anyone about how close they were but...

"I thought you would understand. I never want to see you again. After the wedding, my brother Odin is being reassigned to another sector, and I will be sent to stay with our Legal guardian Dr. J while..." Heero looked away again and watched the flash of lightening outside. The hail had turned into heavy sheets of rain again.

"while I await the arrival of my new fiancée." He didn't see the shock of pain that flashed in Duo's eyes at the prospect of His Heero belonging to another or the jealousy whose origin Duo couldn't decipher. Heero was too busy caressing the scar on his palm, the only wound on his body, which never faded, remembering a promise made in blood so many years ago. Before he knew who Duo was. Before it mattered.

His first kiss...

~Flashback~

Two children huddled against the splintered wood of a dusty chair. This was the last place they could hide without the world intruding. No one else would have dared to come to the ruins of the great hall of the once majestic Black rose castle. They often played here in the over grown gardens surrounding the gazebo knowing no censorious and disapproving eyes would see them here. No one to complain about the inappropriateness of the only child of the great ambassador Heero Yuy Sr. and General Elena Lowe-Yuy playing with a Gaian street kid. No one else would dare approach the building.

A whisper of fear hung like a pall in the very air since the tragedy fifty years ago. On the eve of his wedding, the Emperor of Gaia had disappeared in these very rooms never to be heard from again. Some whispered of evil sorcerers and dark magic, while other wiser ones said that the Emperor had cast a forbidden spell, using The vampirific powers he had inherited from his mother, who was a full blooded Pyreva, to search for the person destined to be his true love, willing to sacrifice everything even his kingdom to find them. Either way he had disappeared, leaving the kingdom to be ruled by his trusted advisors Lord Trowa and Prince Wufei.

The boys separated and the one with the long silken braid kneeled against the weather-stained floor where moonlight had slipped through the patches in the roof to highlight the soiled carpets and the rotting floor beneath his knees. His nimble fingers seemed to search the surface for something when finally relief lit his violet eyes and he pushed against a seemingly smooth ridge. With a creaking groan old gears gave way opening to reveal a scythe nestled against plush immaculate velvet. As he lifted the weapon which was taller then him a glow from the blade was cast into even the darkest nooks of the hall banishing the creeping shadow which had gathered like specters to watch the event enfolding in their midst. It illuminated the body of the boy that held it and for a moment it was almost as if two realities were meshing one with a boy maybe 8 or 9 in street rags, while the other held a regal man standing in robes of state.

Then it was gone and just the boy was left. As the glow dimmed the child Heero noticed the blade seemed to be made of light rather then any mortal metal. The long handle was encrusted with jewels and ancient engravings that seemed to glow red with a life of their own. Child Heero never thought to ask his companion what they meant or how he found the scythe. He had no way of knowing it was the Scythe of the Emperor and if anyone other then the Emperor or his consort touched it their very soul would be sucked from their body leaving them dead.

The young boy looked at child Heero soberly all trace of his normal smile gone.

"No matter what they do, they cannot tear us apart. We are meant to be one soul, one heart." His pouty bottom lip trembled as he struggled not to cry because boys don't cry. Violet blue eyes solemn in the light of the scythe for a moment it seemed like another, older person was staring through his eyes. Reaching forward child Heero brushed a long strand of chestnut hair behind the pointed tip of his companion's ear lovingly as he nodded in agreement.

"I don't know why they had to start this stupid war!" He cried, face wet with tears. With Duo he was never afraid to reveal his emotions. He wasn't afraid to be weak. Visibly child Heero took a deep breath a hiccup barely present in his voice as he murmured softly.

"I'm ready."

They both clutched opposite sides of the blade fingertips meeting in the middle as the deceptively beautiful blade cut deep. Their blood two shades of red met and mingled dulling the brilliant surface. Twin expressions of pain deeper then any surface wound lit their eyes and sweat beaded on their brows as they desperately clung to the agony both crying aloud in almost one voice.

"One in body as in soul, Two hearts beat blood through one whole. By scythe of death and emperor's right. We make this promise on this night. Never to forsake our newborn soul, though time and space between us grow. By full moon light and blood Debt again this promise will meet."

With an agonized cry they both let go, their bodies too young to sustain the bond any longer and the blood disappeared with the glow against the gleaming black surface. Twin wounds closed as they both collapsed side by side. Child Duo gently lifted child Heero's chin and kissed him as soft and fleeting as a butterfly's touch, but a claim nonetheless. Then child Heero fled to join his family on the last shuttle for earth before it was noticed he was missing. He never saw the picture shift again as the Emperor took place of the child as memory slowly faded from his eyes.

~ End Flashback~

His only kiss. Hand against his lips Heero could still remember that touch even if he seemed to be the only one.

"I promise," he whispered.

"Heero?" Duo asked hesitantly and he was whisked back to the stormy present. Blinking away the sudden overwhelming urge to cry he wondered how Duo could possibly have forgotten the promise, all that time together, the first time they met?

"Who?" Duo asked softly. Heero shook his head not willing to say anything in case he revealed he lied. That no one had ever wanted him forever. No one but Duo and Duo didn't anymore.

"I... I can't tell you."

Duo growled in frustration and Heero's eyes widened visibly at the feral sound.

"You tell me everything else, you even told me about your first wet dream. But you can't tell me this or you won't?" He stated cruelly. Unable to bear it any longer Heero shook his head.

"NO!" He cried and ran out into the storm not wanting Duo to see him cry. Not hearing Duo's echoing cry or seeing the flash of light as the branch fell his eyes to blinded by rain and tears. Then nothing.

TBC...

I think I'm getting better at angst!
